Does anyone have reliable information on what percentage of people get interviewed and then how many are admitted? I searched the older posts and saw that they interview 25% to 30% of the applicants, and admit 40~45% of those interviewed. However, that number doesn't make sense. For last year, there were 2756 applicants. 652 were admitted, that's already 23% of all applicants. So they either interview more then 25-30% of the applicants, or admit more than 40-50% interviewed.

It'll be around 40-50% of interviewees accepted. I don't know where people said 25% get interviewed, but that's clearly low... probably close to half get an interview and close to half get accepted after interview.

Note: I've changed a couple profiles from S to D for Yale if you said you got a ding but didn't update the data. I may not have caught all of them, so please update your statuses when you can! We want the metrics to be as accurate as possible. Thanks.

Are there any re-applicants who interviewed last year who have been asked to interview again this year? Any re-applicants who interviewed last year who have been dinged?

I've received 2 emails from Yale with the subject heading "you're invited..." Today. Brutal.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hmm, invited to what?

Sounds like those generic, "You're invited to a Yale SOM master class in..." that everyone gets. I'm getting them and haven't even applied yet.

Yep

From what I've seen, if you interviewed before you won't be interviewed again.
If you reapplied and weren't interviewed before, then .... your guess is as good as mine is ...

If I may ask, what exactly does the dinged email say? Do they post some update on your profile or they just say you haven't been selected?

They ask you to check your application status. You log in and then a letter prompts up saying that you've been denied admissions to the class of 2018...

Here is summary of the recent live chat with Yale Admission Director - Maria Derlipanska. Those who want to view full chat transcript can download it from this post. Good luck!

What are some "watch-outs" for the Yale interview?

Yale_Maria: Just be yourself, answer the questions. Do not talk about what you prepared and what YOU want the interviewer to hear - be attentive to their questions. Again, make sure to address is in the optional essay.

How much interaction is there between the full time students and say the healthcare executive program?

Yale_Maria: The Exec MBA group meets over the weekends so there isn't a whole lot of interaction.

Maria, can u name clubs, initiatives etc. dedicated to healthcare? I intend to pursue career in pharma after my MBA

Yale_Maria: Sure! Here is the complete list of clubs - you can see the healthcare-related ones: https://som.yale.edu/our-programs/mba/st ... mbassadors Feel free to reach out to our Admissions Ambassadors - they'll be happy to hear from you.

I am an international applicant and hence more interested in global career opportunities, especially in Europe. How powerful is Yale brand in those countries?

Yale_Maria: The Yale brand is very strong in Europe. Our newly-admitted students from Europe just started an EuroSOM Club. I am happy to put you in touch with them.

How does Adcom view a gap in studies, such as gap of a year in between higher studies and starting of undergraduation? Will it have negative impact?

Yale_Maria: A gap is ok but make sure to take advantage of the optional essay and explain the gap - do NOT leave the committee guessing what happened.

Other than GPA, do you use any other measures to determine 'academic preparedness' for the rigors of a Yale SOM education?

Yale_Maria: The test scores: GMAT or GRE. Also, all transcripts and all courses - we look at whether you challenged yourself academically and intellectually

I wish to know about the silver scholar invite status

Yale_Maria: We are in the process of reviewing the Silver Scholars applications. We have extended a few invitations and will be extending more. We do this in waves throughout the round, as we cannot review all the applications all at once.

How would you view an applicant who already has a MBA from another country but is applying to Yale for a second master's degree?

Yale_Maria: That's ok with us. One would be disqualified only if that MBA is from another institution in the US.

Maria, does Yale look at the new Integrated Reasoning section scores

Yale_Maria: We are still in the process of collecting data and figuring out how to analyze it so no need to worry too much about it at this point.

Could you please shed some light on impact of H1B lottery system on career prospects of international students at Yale?

Yale_Maria: I know that it can be a challenge because the School has absolutely no control over it. That said, our students have been successful in securing both internships and full-time jobs on multi-year contacts. I would think that our Career Development Center would have a better sense.

Are off campus interviews weighed the same as on-campus interviews?

Yale_Maria: Absolutely - all interviews are evaluated the same, whether it's on campus, in hub cities around the world and skype.

Maria! Are the interviews with adcoms blind?

Yale_Maria: The interviews are conducted blindly - your interviewer would have only seen you CV!

What is one thing about Yale that prospective students will NOT get to know from online resources like the college website or chat rooms?

Yale_Maria: I would say how incredibly special our community is! As you research schools and programs, please take the time to get to know the community that you might be joining. Reach out to various members of our community to get a sense of what they are like. Come for a campus visit and meet some of our current students - talk to them, get to know them, see if you can imagine being in class with them and having them as your friends. You will be committing yourself to a two-year program so it is important to understand whether you would feel comfortable in that environment.

Please give me some insight about the scholarships

Yale_Maria: About the scholarships - all of them are merit-based. Students also take on loans - the same requirements are in place for US and int'l students. That means that int'l students do not need a co-signer or a sponsor. Also, we have a very generous Loan Forgiveness Program - anyone that goes into gov or non-profit work after graduation gets 100% of their loan forgiven.

Current 1st year here. If anyone needs any advice let me know.

I would like to draw your attention to a couple key things:
1) The top 5 undergrad programs represented at Yale SOM for my class are Yale, Columbia, Harvard, Cornell, Brown
2) Average GMAT 720
3) Many candidates like me choose Yale over Columbia, Kellogg and Booth

Here is my sales pitch. This school is on par with Stanford and Harvard in terms of student quality and pedigree. You can sense the momentum as if you are getting into a top -3 school at the ground. Everything the teachers, deans, students talk about is in comparison to Harvard, Stanford or Wharton.

For instance no one ever makes jokes or compares us to NYU, Duke or Darden (schools that are closer to us in the ranks). We compare ourselves in all instances to HWS, and it feels great.

Saying you go to Yale has so many benefits its a joke. You join a rare, selective group that is historical and impressive...

btw my stats:

female
3 yrs work experience, banking BB, 1 yr P.E.
graduated at top lib. arts college
3.9 gpa
740 gmat

This 1,000 times over. I recently interviewed at Yale and I am 100% on board with what she is saying. Yale sent 5 banking recruits out of 35 to Morgan Stanley and 9 consulting recruits out of ~50 to McKinsey. On a percentage basis it's toe to toe for elite traditional jobs with any other school, and the same goes for its nonprofit sector. The ONLY place where Yale could improve is PE/VC in my opinion, which they are aware of and are working hard to leverage Yale College alumni in this, which apparently was successful in the last recruiting cycle. Yale unfairly loses ground in the rankings because rankings do not account for sector balance so Yale's salary numbers do not look as good as they would if normalized for the % going into diff fields. If they did, Yale would easily be within the top 10 seeing as it's been at #10 in US News (only ranking that matters) 2 out of the past 3 years. Its placement in traditional jobs is stronger than its "peer" schools from what I can tell. I came away highly, highly impressed by Yale.

As a prospect for an MBA, who has Yale SOM high on his list for various reasons, I sort of find this a turn-off. But whatev. I suppose there's nothing wrong with thinking that. But then again I'm a person who has Booth and Kellog in his backyard ...

What exactly do you mean by that and why is it a turnoff? Job placement options are an important part of bschool! And I agree that the US News ranking is slow to catch-up with reality, or can be biased in some ways.

I find insecurity in it. That's all.

It's fine to have pride in placement in particular sectors, especially if it's competitive to b-schools that are ranked higher or have a more established footing; the way it was done was just off-putting. I found it odd that HWS were singled out but all the other schools ahead of Yale SOM weren't, all with acknowledging the b-schools currently in Yale's cluster rank as "peers." It's peers, not "peers." I don't think HWS are looking at Yale with much fear or looking towards Yale's trajectory and saying, "Well good for them!" then turning to their own administration barking "If you let up one inch I'll fire your behind quicker than you can say 'We're #1.'"

I'm more than familiar with this talk when I was an undergraduate - students from fine, respectable institutions saying, "We're just as good as so-and-so." I sometimes agreed and sometimes didn't. I noted that it depended on what department as well. Then they talked about rankings. I then said to them, "Who are you going to displace? What school(s) are you going to outrank within five years and why?" And many institutions ahead of their given institution were really fine places to get an undergraduate education.

So (A) I learned to become skeptical of the hype and "momentum" talk and (B) I learned to put things in perspective. And I don't think the US News ranking "is slow to catch-up" if you meant that Yale SOM should be ranked higher (if so, who are they going to displace?) as in cracking T5 or being soundly placed in T10.
