Hi,

Well the only thing surprising me about your post was that you are a trekker yet are aiming not high enough :-)

You have good undergrads, strong extracurriculars, above average GMAT score and work profile therefore if the stories are coherently put, I am sure yours can be a winning application.

The other thing that goes well for you is that you will be one of younger applicants which is mostly seen positively by AdComs.

The only challenge that I see with your profile is that your work experience. From my understanding of your profile, I believe the work that you are doing is mostly routine and therefore finding work stories which stand out might be challenging.

I will be happy to talk to you further on this if you are interested. Connect with us at connect@taterways.com

Hi,

The work I mentioned earlier is exactly the routine work that is expected by the company at my post.
I have a couple of stories which stand out from this. One of which includes being a part of the team which optimized excess use of cold blast (the main product that we supply) at blast furnace end (our internal customer) reducing average noise levels (which were previously in excess of 90 dB), thereby having an environmental impact along with a total saving of about 7.2 million USD (46 lac INR).

Another one is making a cost model for the department alone which helped narrow down a few factors that were giving rise to additional costs.

Hello,

I am applying to mostly US based B Schools this admission season. Kindly evaluate my profile and whether the colleges identified are reasonable.

Indian Male,
Age: 23
GMAT: 720 (94 percentile), Q:51 (97) V:36 (84) IR: 7/8 AWA: 6/6
Undergrad: IIT Kharagpur
Mechanical Engineering (CGPA 8.56/10 : top 5% in the department) with Minor in Maths and computing (CGPA 8.24/10)

Work Experience: 26 months approx
Manager Power Systems at Tata Steel Limited (flat structure, so no promotions visible in my profile). In charge of operations and maintenance at turbo blowing stations which cater to 5 Blast Furnaces.
Job role includes
- Leading a team of maintenance personnel to ensure sustained operation of the blowing station
- Planning day to day strategies and Resource allocation to enhance employee productivity
- Reduce downtime and unplanned outage of equipment
- Taking stringent quality measures to ensure compliance with the Quality Standard of the company
- identifying and Mitigating associated risks to ensure safety of all employees working under my supervision
- Identifying and implementing technological changes to improve operational efficiency

Internship:
releaseMyAd (Start up): 1 month
- Worked in business development towards expanding the customer base which at the time was located in and around Kolkata, India (location of the main office) despite being an online marketing service provider

Leadership roles in Undergrad:

- Governor, Space technology Students' Society (space tech club of IIT Kharagpur): involved in conducting and planning workshops and guest lectures on Space technology across the country. Got to interact with several scientists from ISRO for guest lectures to learn about the challenges they face in the space program in a developing country like India. Conducted many sky gazing sessions to introduce people about astronomy and space technology which is not directly a part of most undergraduate curriculum in India

- Head, National students Space Challenge (space tech fest, IIT Kharagpur): Involved in organizing and planning the three day fest. Started as a part of logistics and event management team and eventually went on to lead the entire organizing team to formulate different events and ensure increased student participation year on year (increase in 70% by my final year). We started in 2011 and at the time were the only such fest dedicated to space technology in India.

Extracurricular:
- Trekking: trekked to Mugdha top (12000 ft) in the Garhwal region, Himalayas, Uttarakhand in India.
- Aspiring traveler: Traveled to more than 10 holiday destinations across India including Goa, Darjeeling and a few neighboring countries such as Nepal and Thailand.

Future goal: Management Consulting

Schools I am considering to apply:
Stretch (according to me): Ross
Reasonable reach: Duke, Darden
On par: McCombs, Georgetown, IMD
Safe: Kelley (Indiana)

Hi Tanmaya,

I agree with Deep that you have a great profile in the making.

My earnest suggestion is to wait it out another year- it's not gonna make too much difference in the larger scheme of things. In the mean time, work on your profile. Improve the GMAt score, and gain some more leadership experiences at work.
We have worked with several Tata Motors/ Steel guys and know that there are lots of leadership and initiative taking opportunities available - grab them, and make an impact on your organization. It will pay rich dividends in your application.

With a little bit effort, b-schools such as Ross, which seem like a stretch right now, will become within reach. You have had the best education by going to one of the best IITs...continue that trend by going to the best b-school.
