Hello Marcof11,

Thanks for writing in.

It is good to see some leadership experience pretty early on in your career and you must be sure to highlight the same in an appropriate manner in your essays. With your current GMAT score and profile, we feel you have a good shot at making it into the MiM program provided the essays you put forth aptly communicate the strengths in your profile and showcase a strong sync between your professional experience and future goals. :-)

All the best!

Hi ssathyajith , overall you have a decent profile but you surely need to differentiate yourself more if you are applying for late rounds. Sharing some points I hope you can address to make your application stronger

1. 8 years is a long time to have worked in the same company. Make sure you are able to show impressive progression and bring your career growth into perspective in an interesting manner. Address what kept you at Siemens for so long. Did you get any international mobility opportunities, team leadership opportunities or interesting cross functional projects? Bring international focus wherever possible.

2. Post MBA goals - I would consider Corporate Leadership Programs a really good choice for your post MBA goal. However, do your research and specifically mention the programs of interest. Be conscientious in your approach. Think outside the box. If you are able to network with respective corporates in Europe (including Siemens) and find a strong Post MBA match even before you apply to HEC, that could fetch you a definite admit.

3. Address how you would continue to do community service and give back to the society in future. Kudos to you for volunteering for visually challenged students. Show how developing connections in Europe and globally through HEC would help you bring attention towards problems/ social issues in your home country. How do you plan to give back to your community?

Best wishes

Hi rc871824 , overall great profile for both HEC and INSEAD. Better to apply in earlier rounds. My two cents:

1. With a background in banking and finance as an applicant who speaks numbers day in day out, any further improvement in your GMAT score would not matter much to the schools. Do not worry much about your undergrad GPA as that is way in the past and you cant change that. I would really not be worried about your GMAT at this point.

2. Post MBA goals and why second MBA - You need to have crystal clear goals and strong logic behind why you would require a 2nd MBA as an alum of one of the top B schools of India and having had successful stints in banking and fintech investment startup. Make sure you are able to convince the schools on your post MBA goals and support your idea with proof of discussions with folks from your target companies/target geography. Getting this on point is the most important aspect in your particular case IMO.

Best wishes

Hi

I am looking to apply to HEC Paris' Jan 2023 intake. My professional, personal and academic details are as below:

Nationality:Indian
Age:31
Undergrad GPA: 2.49/4.00 (from BITS Pilani - one of the top 6-8 engineering schools in india with an acceptance rate of ~1.2%)
Postgraduate GPA: 2.8/4.00 (from IIFT Delhi - one of the top 15 b schools in India) (was in the top 0.5 percentile in the entrance test) (have multiple straight A in Finance subjects)
GMAT: 710 (q49,v38)
CFA level 1 with distinction in all subject areas tested.

Work Experience: 7 years of work experience across the social sector, venture capital, front-end finance and banking, and finally in Financial Technology.

1.2 years as a full-time Teach for India fellow teaching kids in an under-resourced and low-income community in Pune, India.
2.1 year as an Analyst at a Venture capital firm
3.Management Trainee then Manager and finally Senior Manager at one of the largest private banks in India (hired straight out of b school as part of a selective leadership development program of the bank). Role in front-end securities trading, structuring, valuation etc. Considerable interaction with overseas corporate clients, both Indian and MNCs. Have handles businesses/deals of the order of 100 to 500 million $.Obtained the highest possible performance rating for three consecutive years (basically every year I was with the bank) and promoted twice in as many years.
4.Currently, a fintech product manager at one of India's largest online investment platforms. Managing product strategy, customer interactions, user experience, etc

Other Information:
1. Nominated for the Economic Times Young leaders award by my previous employer.
2. Rally driver for Mahindra Adventure in the amateur category.
3. Leadership position in multiple student bodies, clubs and organizing committees at BITS Pilani.
4.Part of the team that brought Tedx to BITS pilani for the first time.
5. Distinction holding painter in school.

Long Term Career Goal : Leadership role in Product Strategy (in areas such as Fintech, E-commerce, consumer facing businesses, etc)

My specific question: Considering my low cgpa, I realise that my GMAT should be as high as possible. Is a 710 sufficient to somewhat negate the impact of the low under-grad CGPA ? Because if it is not then I will have to re-attempt the test. However, going for a re-attempt will result in missing the earlier application rounds of HEC and because I am from an over-represented applicant pool I believe it is not advisable to apply in a later round. Further, there is no guarantee that I will score in the 740+ range in my second re-attempt although I am confident I have fairly high chances of doing so.

Taking into account all of the above should I chose an earlier application round + a bit lower gmat score OR re-attempt and go for a later round with the new score (provided I do better in my re-attempt) ? Any expert advice will be highly valuable

Hi nikx,

Thank you for your post!

First, I would like to mention that you have accomplished some great feats at a very young age. Furthermore, if you could score around 710-715 (which I believe you could as per your current accomplishments), then voila! You are one step (a giant step) closer to your dream.

Also, as I can see, you have quite an experience in marketing, more specifically digital marketing, so what I would like you to do is highlight the relevant skill-set nurtured through your internships, relevant projects, examples of leadership, the impact created, and the outcome (in terms of numbers) during your tenure as an intern! Now, for your question, definitely highlight your business of customized gifting since it’s a great example of being a leader, a risk-taker, and, more importantly, a person who is hungry to try out new things and achieve more. I would like to mention that do work on your post-MiM goals. See, the point is the adcom wants to understand how your future goals are relevant in terms of a MiM degree from their Business School.

Also, I can see that you have an exquisite amount of ECAs and certifications. Your ECAs can help you give a major boost to your overall profile if you could just capitalize on them properly! As a PR executive or Head of Publicity for the college film society, I would like you to mention the challenges faced, the responsibilities, the outcome achieved, and lastly, the impact created by your comprehensive reports. Furthermore, I would like you to add some volunteering experience if possible to characterize your selfless nature and sense of social justice.

Finally, I would like to point out that since you do have a fair amount of content-creating experience, it will be critical for you to draft amazing essays that mesmerize the adComs. All you need to do is research the school values, curriculum, and how a MiM degree from HEC is going to help you achieve your goals. At last, prepare well for your interviews, leave no stone unturned since questions can be asked from every aspect of your profile, and also, if possible, give some mock interviews.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to HEC. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi kdevin323.

It would be nice if you can give GMAT another shot. The HEC class average is 690 and you are 30 points below that. SO any upward trajectory would help.
Your work exp sounds good although I am wondering about your chosen career path- product management to consulting to F&B family business. It would be interesting to know why consulting? what skills do you hope to gain via consulting that would help you in the family biz? How about the option of working in an FMCG / operations or Supply chain heavy company such as Amazon / a rotational development program, where you are likely to get more hands-on implementation experience? Just putting some thoughts for you to explore further.

Your ECAs are good. I see a lot of variety, which would help as you need to write an essay on your ECAs for the HEC application. There's also an essay on international experience. As you have travelled a fair bit, you will have an opportunity to bring that out.

Hi nikx ,

Stellar profile for a young applicant :)

Your ECs and work experience are convincing examples of your well-rounded personality, willingness to hustle, and leadership potential. Definitely bring out instances where you took initiative and led functionality in projects in an international setup (filmfare experience in Dubai). Demonstrate your ability to resolve conflicts and bring people from different backgrounds on the same page to work towards a common goal. As long as you can talk about your learnings and takeaways from an initiative, there is no need to leave any side gig or small business out of your resume/application.

You have not talked about your post-MiM goals which is important to put your decisions and experience in perspective to tie the entire narrative together. It would be interesting to know what is your vision for your future. Think about what skill sets do you need from your target MiM program and the career after in the short term, to be able to achieve your long-term goals. A 700+ GMAT score will surely give you an edge as an Indian applicant.

If you wish to seek professional guidance on your application strategy for top B Schools, do reach out.

Best wishes

Hellokdevin323,

Thanks for writing in.

While you have a fine overall profile complete with international exposure, extra-curricular activities, and managerial experience, you must work on improving your GMAT as your current score is way under the average at ISB.

Further, we do feel that you will need to revise your career goals to make them align better with your existing experience as the current progression suggested by you is not flowing very logically.

Good luck!

Hi kdevin323 , you have some very interesting international experiences to talk about in your essays! However, neither your GMAT score nor goals game plan seems conducive to a competitive outcome. Therefore my suggestion would be to work on your GMAT and further refine your goals strategy to make a stronger impression.

I suggest you approach your GMAT prep (if you plan to retake) in a systematic manner. Identify your problem areas and create a plan on how you could increase the score in the shortest span of time. If quant section is bothering you, I recommend you practice with GMATclub mocks. Those are some of the best resources for quant that I came across.

Best wishes

First, I would like to say that you do have a robust profile, a good amount of work experience, and a hefty lot of ECAs. So profile-wise, I must say you have done well! Coming to your GMAT, I recommend you reappear and try to increase your score.

On the work front, I would say that you have an appropriate amount of experience in different roles, including the difference in roles & responsibilities, projects, and work environment. More about you can also mention about your recent project and Certifications. Now about your ECAs, you do have good ECAs that could be framed to boost your application; you need to mention the volunteering experience, the challenges faced, the impact created, skill-set developed, and any leadership examples.

Regarding your post-mba goals, I would like to understand how experience in consulting business help you grow your family business? Overall you have a good profile, and you will need to align your profile with HEC values. You can visit HEC page to draft an elegant piece of essay to catch the attention of the adcom!

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and help you understand further chances to the school. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Tackle your MiM Application for R3 and Later rounds

Cheers!

Thank you very much to each of you for taking the time to reply.

While I currently manage products on a regional basis, I need to learn how to run a business holistically. Therefore, the aim is to move to consulting and become a business strategy consultant and learn how to deal with the challenges businesses face. Given the array of issues to which these consultants are exposed, I feel I will then be equipped to step into the family business in an impactful way.

Do you agree? Completely agree with @MBAdecodee RE the FMCG space

Thank you so much again

Hi Arthurito , great profile overall, the only major concern being your GMAT score ( for someone who is targeting Msc Finance). Hope you can focus on your strong academic inclination citing some earlier achievements.

Sharing some points here for your reference (wrt Masters application) to ensure you seem highly motivated for the course

• Show strong academic focus (mention any scholarships, academic awards, and accolades you received in the past)
• Show enthusiasm and motivation for the study of the subject
• Show understanding, experience, and appreciation of the subject through real-life applications, projects, or internships. Can reflect on some topics that really interest you.
• Highlight super curriculars – what supplementary books, articles, research papers, newspapers you read.
What podcasts you listen to? How these activities support and compliment your interest in the subject?
• Highlight Extra Curriculars – what are the transferrable skills that will help you achieve goals
• Show originality and thought process
• Show active engagement with the target school

Best wishes

Hello Arthurito,

Hope this finds you well.

The one thing your profile lacks at this point is a good GMAT score. Hence, we would recommend that you work on improving the same. Besides the score, you have a fairly good profile (especially the leadership experience); so, provided you are able to put forth a set of essays that does justice to what you've done thus far and are able to improve your GMAT score, you will have a good chance.

Good luck!

Hello,
Thanks for starting this thread! I am decided to start application for an MBA (preferably in Europe, but I am open to consider other locations). My prospects are IMD, HEC and IE for 2023 intake, but I also considering Mannheim or WHU for 2022 intake (I am not very convinced with the idea to wait for 2023- Aug/Sep intake). Please kindly check my profile and give me some feedback.

Background and nationality:
31 years old male, Peruvian, with 5 years of work experience in engineering and business development.

Undergrad Information:
BS Mechanical Engineering from National University of Engineering of Peru- GPA: 3.0
BS Industrial Engineering from National University of Engineering of Peru- GPA > 3.5 (1st place in the class)

GMAT:
720 (Q-51 V-36 IR-8 AWA-4)

Work experience and leadership:
-Asset Maintenance Trainee in a hands-on experience internship at field operations for an International Oil Company – 01 year
-Assistant for an independent consultant on management and processes – 1.5 years (while studying my second major)
-Product Specialist for a small B2B company that sales machinery – 6 months (transition to commercial area)
-Business Development Analyst in a global company (machinery manufacturer)- 02 years //Currently
-Indirect Sales Responsible as an acting role in the same company listed above – 01 year //Currently
-Entrepreneur with an e-commerce startup founded by me and a group of friends – 01 year //Currently
Regarding leadership experience, I have not yet held a job position with some staff in charge or a middle-management position. I struggled with the process of career turning from engineering to commercial management (I stopped to work for a whole year to take the junior classes of my second major). However, as I am doing well in my current job position, they gave the opportunity to lead the strategy implementation of indirect sales which includes to plan, start and monitoring relationships with business partners and distributors. Also, as CEO of my own startup, I have to lead a team of 04 people and drive the company to a next level (Although is a small company, I am learning many valuable lessons of leadership)

Community:
- 05 years of volunteer in TECHO, an NGO that focus on poverty alleviation in Latam.
- Leader of many projects launched by TECHO for the construction of emergency houses in poor urban communities in Peru.
- Member of the TECHO’s delegation for humanitarian aid during the national emergency caused by natural disaster called “Fenomeno del Niño” (2017).
- Leader of the team of digitalization of data of poor urban communities to help people in need during the pandemic caused by Covid-19 (2020)

International exposure
I have not worked or studied abroad. However, because I work for a global corporation, I usually coordinate with people from different nationalities.

Post MBA goals:
1) Joining a global corporation as a leading role in business development, strategy, or marketing. It could be a company in the same industry of my current company (machinery) but I am open to explore another industries such as tech or e-commerce.
2) Joining a startup or founding mine (This is something I have been considering during the last year as a result of my entrepreneur experience)

Hi Lure1415 , hope you are doing great!

You have an interesting profile indeed, and since you come from a differentiated LATAM background, I too feel you could take your chance with applying to the late rounds at your target schools. You have a great GMAT score and especially a stellar quant score! So congratulations on that.

I have recently helped applicants get calls from HEC in R3 and the key to getting an invite for the late rounds is to present a highly differentiated profile, the keyword being "present". Focus on your uniqueness in all aspects - personal and professional values that are considered important by the target schools. Present your work experience in a chronological form giving the rationale behind all your career decisions. You come from a unique and rich culture, so talk about it- what influences during your formative years or after make the person you are today. Highlight any challenges you faced in life so that your achievements can be evaluated objectively by the admissions committee.

Looks like you have built a strong professional foundation through a multitude of roles, demonstrating (but not limited to) your passion for the engineering field. Your entrepreneurial experience establishes you as someone who is willing to take risks and move out of your comfort zone and therefore, your vision to use MBA as an opening wedge to work in new geographies on new kinds of challenges is well-founded. Think outside the box! Show active engagement with the alumni network or potential recruiters to further differentiate yourself. I suggest you talk to companies or alums who recruit for your target schools and gather insights on how you could succeed to make the transition to EU job market post MBA. Presenting these insights in your applications and interview discussions would leave a strong impression on the school. Present what transferrable skills from your previous work experience would help you find a suitable role in the industry of your choice. Do not shy away from laying down your thought process for your career goals and also list alternative paths (Plan B) that would also eventually help to attain goals in the midterm.

Lastly do not worry about a lack of international work experience as you can talk about international projects where you remotely managed conflicts within multinational teams and generated value for your company. Your ECs are strong and relevant as well so also reflect on how you would contribute to your community in the long term as an empathetic business leader.

Best wishes
