Hi Iti24, thanks for sharing your details.

Your 10th/12th scores and CGPA are strong. Your GMAT score, while competitive, is equal to the average (690) of the HEC MBA class of 2022. I suggest retaking the GMAT if possible, as a higher-than-average score can improve your chances of both admit and scholarships.

Your consulting experiences at GEP and the current firm showcase your analytical and team/ collaboration skills. Would like to know more details about your roles i.e. key projects you worked on, the challenges you faced, what actions you took and the impact it had on your clients/ firm (ideally quantified). Also, regarding your post-MBA goals: what are your short-term and long-term goals? Do you have a target sector, function, geography in mind? And how, according to you, would the HEC MBA help achieve your goals? These points would allow me to better assess your profile and advise accordingly.

If you'd like to discuss, please schedule a free session through the link below.

Arjun1001, thanks for sharing your details.

Your 10th/12th scores are good, however CGPA is on the lower side. A strong GMAT score (730+, as you are targeting) should alleviate concerns about the lower CGPA and position your profile well. I suggest highlighting in your application specific undergrad courses/ electives (e.g. math) that showcase your quantitative abilities.

Work ex/ achievements and EC's are strong and diverse. Since you haven't mentioned your post MBA goal, I suggest having clarity on which domains/ sectors excite you the most (and "why"). Having post-MBA target companies/ roles is a great idea. Then identify the skillsets you need to further develop on, to become an "ideal-fit" candidate for your target role. Also remember to have a clear and compelling answer to why MBA and why HEC. One way to go about it is to list down your achievements/ experiences in your past roles along with the skills you have developed at these roles. Match these against the skill-sets needed for your post-MBA roles. Then articulate clearly why/ how HEC is best placed to help you make that transition.

Specifically for the HEC application, a good amount of self-introspection, honesty and clarity are required to have strong answers to the essay prompts. For example, essay #3 (on leadership & ethics), essay #4 (on a different life), essay #5 (Option B: analyzing an underserved movie/ book/ play) are all prompts through which the school tries to understand your values, principles, thought process and philosophies. Your EC's can be referenced in some of these essays as well, and importantly the lessons you learned from those experiences.

Happy to have a chat if you would like to discuss.

Arvind

Hi Arjun1001 hope you are doing great

Your GPA is low. Your preparation for top-level B School applications should reflect your acknowledgement of this aspect. You must work hard to attain an impressive GMAT score if you are serious about Top business school like HEC Paris. Please target Q>48 and V~40 to demonstrate commitment to meeting academic standards. No amount of good storytelling can compensate if you fall short on academic thresholds because MBA is an analytical course at the end of the day.

Sharing some ideas to help you
Read- Navigating a low GPA in B School applications

It would be interesting to know how you decided to pivot from an engineering background to banking. I see good potential for storytelling here. For example, if you found your passion in Finance after college and you've taken additional preparation courses outside of your degree or have worked in Finance-related roles, be sure to highlight these experiences in your application. This shows that you have a genuine interest in the field and have taken steps to develop your skills and knowledge. Additionally, if you've earned any relevant professional certifications or licenses, be sure to include them in your application materials as well. This can demonstrate to the admissions committee that you have relevant expertise beyond your academic record. This will surely help your case of low GPA.

Since you mentioned working in Public Sector Banking heres a tip regarding your goals startegy-
Present a compelling narrative about your motivation to work in the public sector (pre MBA). You may have interesting insights from working on projects that concern specific target groups (TGs, for example, such as the bottom of the pyramid in the Indian economy or some other TG). What problems did you identify and attempt to solve? Showcase compassionate leadership through stories and a determined will to mobilize specific sectors post-MBA, leveraging your prior experience in public sector banking and the increased business acumen gained from the HEC Paris MBA program. Be mindful of your goals. This will require further discussion and research (before you write your essays), but I believe you can leverage your experience to pursue a wide range of roles in advisory, consulting, startups, impact initiatives, and more.

ECs
Your ECs are plenty and interesting. I would attach more value to recent engagements. I also suggest that you delve deeper and analyze whether you have overlooked any mundane, unobvious, or subtle initiatives you may have undertaken over the years. This could include activities such as travel, learning a new language, participating in diversity initiatives at work (such as speaking out against gender discrimination or advocating for diversity in the workforce), providing financial or moral support to those in need, teaching underprivileged children, organizing diversity talks or off-site activities to enhance collaboration among teams, and more. I have observed applicants often struggle to recall, in the early stages of the application, how they have contributed to the betterment of their community. It may require some introspection and soul searching to uncover these experiences.

Certifications-
I am note clear about the significance of the certification you are planning to get (6 sigma). However, if you are passionate about it, go for it, but after you have attained your target GMAT score. :)

Personalized advice tailored to your specific situation is just a phone call or message away. Do not hesitate to reach out to us if you need help navigating your unique circumstances in the B School admissions process.

Hello Arjun1001,

Your profile looks good on the surface. You mentioned that you are targeting a GMAT score of 730+. This is a good target, as HEC Paris typically looks for strong GMAT scores. A score in this range will help strengthen your application. Your 10th-grade GPA of 8.8/10 and 12th-grade percentage of 80.5% demonstrate a solid academic foundation. However, your undergraduate CGPA of 6.56/10 might be considered lower compared to the average admitted students. It would be beneficial to highlight any relevant coursework, projects, or academic achievements during your undergraduate studies.

Coming to your work experience, your 48 months of work experience as a manager in a public sector bank is a valuable asset. It showcases your leadership skills, ability to handle multiple departments, and your promotion through the merit channel. Highlighting your achievements in starting a new section, managing a large number of branches, and increasing business in the gold loan department will strengthen your application.

Speaking about your ECs, your participation and achievements in dance competitions at the school and college level demonstrate your talent and dedication. Involvement in organizing fashion shows and cultural programs further highlights your event management and leadership skills. Your sports achievements as the captain of the high school football team, participation in basketball and volleyball teams, and current representation at the state level in football demonstrate your teamwork and commitment to sports. Mentioning your participation in the school drama team, winning Man of Match awards, and involvement in various bank-related events and committees showcase your diverse interests and active engagement outside of work.

Having certifications like JAIIB and planning to pursue Lean Six Sigma Certification from KPMG can be beneficial, as they demonstrate your commitment to professional development and acquiring additional skills.

Overall, your profile showcases a mix of professional experience, leadership, achievements, and extra-curricular involvement. While your undergraduate CGPA is comparatively lower, you have the opportunity to compensate for it by highlighting your accomplishments and skills. Make sure to showcase your passion, leadership abilities, and unique experiences in your application essays and during interviews.

It's important to note that admission decisions at HEC Paris are competitive and depend on various factors, including the applicant pool, specific program requirements, recommendation letters, and personal statements.

We offer a limited number of complimentary profile evaluations each week . We match you with the students and alums of top B-Schools according to your background and target schools. In this call, the experts will try to dig out your USP for top B-schools and provide you with honest feedback on your profile and chances to your target schools.

Best of luck with your application to HEC Paris!

askquestion
Hello everyone, could you give me your opinion based on my profile. I am quite unsure whether my GMAT score would be enough for HEC Paris. I am interested for the MSc in International Finance programme.

Background and nationality:

I am Greek but im doing my undergraduate in Germany (no German nationality)

Undergrad Information:

Studying in a private german business school, very well-known in Germany, among the top 3.
GPA: 4.0/4.0 (around 97%)

GMAT:

Total score 680 (Q47, V35, IR7)

My score is the only thing that is making me unsure. If necessary I could retake it, I still have some time as I will be applying for the 2024 intake.

Work experience and leadership

A lot of experience in investment banking (3x internships, 2 of them in smaller companies, 1 in the investment banking division of one of the big american banks) and private equity (2x internships, one in a small company, the other in one of the large american PE funds).

Community and others

Active in 2 student initiatives at my university
2x scholarships from different organizations

Thats all. I assume that apart from my GMAT score, nothing else would speak against my admission at HEC. The question is thus whether I should retake GMAT and try to score >= 700.

What do you think? Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

Hello askquestion,

Thanks for your query.

There is absolutely nothing to lose in retaking the test and trying to get a better score. So, to answer your question -> Yes, you should retake the GMAT! :-) An improved score will only improve your chances.

All the best!

Hello somubarua13,

Hope this finds you well.

The leadership opportunities you have been exposed to stand out in your profile and you should highlight the same in your application. Overall, it is your lower years of experience that make us a bit apprehensive about your application to European schools. We would suggest you gain another year of work experience, as well as retake the GMAT (to see if you can improve any further) before commencing the application process for HEC Paris.

All the best!

Q: What are the chances of getting scholarships if I get the admit? and how to apply.

Hello nikhil0602,

Thanks for writing in.

One cannot quantify scholarship chances; however, a number of our students, who apply to HEC Paris, do get significant scholarships, each year. In case you are able to improve your score, the chances of a scholarship will significantly go up.

Scholarships are, generally, handed out on a merit basis; hence, you need not apply separately; in case the school requires a separate essay, the application process will indicate the same.

Hope this helps!

All the best!

+Know Adobe Photoshop, illustrator, AI, SDL Trados (Translation Program) CAT Tools (including SDL Trados Studio), Enterprise-Resource-Planning-Software (ERP)

Why MiM and why Europe:

1) Because of lack of academic background in economics, I want to receive master in management and to learn more business/management/economics courses to understand in-depth about all the processes (it’s essential for my growth as a specialist)

2) During my business trip to Vietnam I met lots of businessmen from Europe who aimed to develop their businesses in South-East Asia. I learned from them a lot about an European market and how much potential it has (especially in connection to an Asian market in which I have quite a deep knowledge). That’s why I want to become a specialist in an European market, to gain some network and to work in Europe.

I’d like to work in Europe in export-import/logistics or in consulting projects (with asian markets perspective as well).

Dear Team,
My sincere apologies in advance if my profile seems laughable due to my GPA.
I am an Indian Female, 25 yrs, Studied Fashion Design, with a 2.0 GPA, GMAT - 680 Workex - 3.5 yrs in varying industries.

However, using my work experience I can surely depict a different story in supporting my ambitions to pursue a top MBA.
I studied Fashion Design from India and did a BA hons coming from an underrepresented background that encouraged me to give a shot at trying atleast.

Unfortunately there are numerous reasons for my low gpa in Undergrad, as I had just lost my father right before I was starting college, I came from a very strict family that wasn't allowing me to go to the college of my choice which was in another state and was also India's best design college. I definitely want to make the Adcoms understand that the issues affected me are a bit genuine which resulted in a low GPA, and I really want to showcase, that my motivations are stronger than my GPA.

I was the class representative of my batch for two years, founding member of two societies as well - Fashion Society as well as Quizzing society, along with other team members. I was also a part of another society that would plan all the college events, bring in sponsors, work towards the betterment of students (basically a student council) as well as volunteering in times of need during natural calamities and arranging funds for the homeless as well as animals. Our grading was extremely subjective, where professors relied on the kind of trend which we had chosen for our projects, leading to a certain kind of bias. The grading was extremely tough as our average scores of the batch was somewhere around 50% and we have never seen anyone scoring a 70% yet.

Describing my work experience, I bagged a placement offer from my college at a retail startup in 2020 during peak covid, which at present is currently in talks of getting acquired by one of India's largest groups . During my time there, being a fresher I made use of all the opportunities given to me - worked on several things like managing daily production, which made me understand how to work with tailors and vendors to manufacture stock efficiently, figure quality checks and understand logistics. I worked on marketing initiatives as well as e commerce planning for the brand, my main KPI was initially to assist in product development, but I slowly took up more responsibilities.

Post this, I decided to shift to marketing properly as I was very excited to explore more, so I interned at a beauty startup, that mainly targeted teens and gen z. An internship was important because not many recruiters could understand my professional experience in terms of marketing. I handled several brand campaigns, partnerships and onboarded several key opinion leaders in the beauty industry to speak about their experience with the brand. Alongside this, I worked on the brand's shopify interface handling logistics and customer support.

I got an opportunity to work in the brand and marketing team at India's leading and biggest Eyewear brand, which is India's Warby Parker and a Unicorn. I had a great time working on all sorts of responsibilities. My main KPI was to work for the brand's marketing initiatives, maintaining its image, creating digital campaigns with a huge team, for its in-house brand. Along with this, I worked on several programs based around loyalty, customer acquisition, and product development for limited edition collaborations with different brands.

Next, I worked with India's leading agency that had initially launched some of the most iconic brands like Zara etc in India. During my role there, I worked with some of the world's biggest luxury brands belonging to the LVMH Group - Fendi and Tiffany and Co. My portfolio of brands included several fashion, lifestyle and beauty brands as well as some recently launched F&B Startups and Alcohol brands. In addition to this, I also worked on pitches that bagged a global contract with the with one of the biggest luxury hotel brand. For these brands, I worked on generating PR of about approximately 30 million each for 6 months, planning several digital campaigns, events and experiences for the brands.

I am currently working with my family in their business as I wanted to prepare for my gmat and also discover the world of ecommerce and retail (which was my main interest since day 1). The organisation is a software consultancy firm that have retail clients across the world and majorly serve some retailers based in Scandinavian countries. We make Point of sale systems for some of Norway's major retailers as well as govt properties and also offer business solutions. My job was to work on creating strategies to acquire more retail brands in other cities, prepare marketing content for presentations, testing the websites and the release as well as expanding clientele in different industries in India. The reason why I want to pursue an MBA is because it was my childhood dream to be someone who can handle, build and grow a business. I kept on working with several brands to understand marketing from scratch, to building a brands retail ecosystem, and getting onto e commerce which are all the same things that the organisation does for other clients and I wanted to be a part of it. In addition to this, I want to build a brand under my father's business, offering tech solutions to retail and fashion brands for not only POS systems but also for product development, sourcing and manufacturing encouraging sustainable practices as well.

I have also participated in several volunteering activities where I started an Initiative at my family's organisation to help females from a financially weaker background to pursue their undergraduate education. I worked as pro bono for an event towards child disability on behalf of my agency , where our team did their PR. In addition to this, I have also worked with my college's student society, where we have raised funds for several landslides that would take place during monsoons, raising funds for the homeless as well as teaching primary school kids how to paint, sketch and draw.

I am requesting for an honest feedback wanting to understand if there are any wild chances that I can get into these or any of the top 50 US B schools.
To be absolutely honest, ever since my dad's demise, i've been dealing with a string of bad luck that have been making me feel depressed over the fact that my gpa is affected, because I cannot sew and got a bad grade in fashion. It would feel funny and disheartening as well, to be rejected on this basis as the course I picked unfortunately has no ties related to quant academics , finding it depressing to be rejected on my ability to not being able to sew or make flower pots.

My sincere apologies for the long write up, but I feel I needed a lot more words to express my desperation.
Thank you in advance for the feedback, and if possible i'd be grateful for more b school suggestions too !

Hi alcbee123 hope you are doing great and thanks a lot for sharing a personal side to your story in such detail. That helps put things into perspective.

I have worked with successful applicants with Fashion Design and Retail backgrounds before and I strongly believe that you would be a great fit for HEC Paris given their focus on leadership, entrepreneurship, and close affiliations within the retail industry (even luxury retail or impact retail if that interests you).

There are several strong points in your profile, I will point out a few specifically

1. Your variety of experience working in fashion & lifestyle and retail brand marketing. Shows you are a self-starter despite your adversities. Show that you worked in a fast-paced environment and with various strategic teams, which has given you the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, interact with high-level executives, and take advantage of best-in-class exposure.

2. Your latest stint at your family business. Honestly, the projects you mentioned here showcase a lot of potential for storytelling.
You can utilize this to your advantage by seeking out short-term learning opportunities and building a network post-MBA that you can tap into when you embark on your entrepreneurial journey. Consider what type of network would be most beneficial for you and show that you will take proactive steps to connect with like-minded individuals, attend relevant events, and participate in industry groups (relevant to your entrepreneurship goals). This will help you acquire new skills and knowledge while also establishing relationships that can provide support and assistance in the future. The adcom would look upon very favorably on your family business. Business schools love applicants who are destined for great opportunities and success :)

Regarding the family business stint, you should focus on demonstrating A) the Scale (think growth rate) of your business under your leadership and the impact, B) a solid plan for the future, whether in your family business or your own business and how HEC Paris would help you build the network and your brand. As a new generation in the family business, you can also present your ideas by citing your fresh and unconventional approach to business (as opposed to the traditional ones followed currently) as your motivation for pursuing the MBA before taking a leadership position in your family business. The HEC application has plenty of room to talk about all things interesting. So, make the best use of it.

Remember that your professional background and growth trajectory is the most critical part on which B-schools will evaluate you, so make sure you present this well in your essays. It is also essential to describe your motivations for taking on a variety of career opportunities and demonstrate your growth mindset in light of the leadership position you hope to acquire after the MBA.

Regarding the academics, I will be honest. A sub 700 GMAT doesnt do much to counter the very low GPA (the context around your GPA will be taken into consideration by the adcom. But you must still cover ground to show you can cope with the rigorous academic curriculum. You must show a penchant for academic prowess by targeting a high GMAT score. Try your best to increase your score so that you at least get a strong consideration. There are many useful tips and ideas in my writeup below that can help you address a low GPA in your MBA application:

alcbee123 - thanks for this detailed write-up, there is absolutely no need to apologize.

Some comments from an initial review:

1. HEC, being based (almost in) Paris has a strong retail association: there are multiple alumni, including in very senior roles, at the likes of Hermès/ LVMH etc. and these firms have regular events/ lectures on-campus. In the 2022 HEC MBA class, ~8% of women landed in retail/ luxury roles post MBA. Highlighting your pre-MBA experiences and passion for this sector, including your family business background can present a strong rationale for applying. Also have clarity on exactly what parts of the HEC experience (i.e. courses, specializations, clubs, alumni network, industry connects, company recruitments etc.) make the program appealing to you

2. Please clarify: what is your immediate post-MBA goal? Is it to get back to your family business, or find a role in France/ Europe, or elsewhere?

3. The GPA is on the lower side. While AdComs consider well-reasoned and data-backed explanations (i.e. subjective grading), it is better to over-compensate for a lower GPA with other aspects of the profile (i.e. GMAT/ GRE score, CV, work experience, strong essays, etc.)

4. The current GMAT score (looking at the split, particularly a lower Quant score) isn't ideal. I suggest a retake if possible (or GRE if you are more comfortable: taking official mocks and analyzing your strengths/ weaknesses in both can help assess). While I have met candidates (including Indians) with 680 GMAT including in my batch at HEC, it's better to aim with a stronger score

5. HEC is one of those schools that focuses a lot on your personality, beyond what is on your CV/ grades, and hence the detailed essay prompts in the application. Aim to present your anecdotes, achievements, traits, motivations and overall personality in a balanced manner, to make the essays compelling and unique. I believe you have the profile to do that.

Hope this helps a bit. Feel free to reach out for a deeper 1:1 chat.

P.S: I am conducting a "HEC Paris Essays Workshop" on 13th Aug Sunday at 6pm IST (2:30pm Paris). If you are interested, please check the details and register at bit.ly/admitstreet_hec_workshop

I'm a engineering school student on financial engineering (maths, finance, computer science). And my school is top 10 in France. I will graduate in 2024 and looking to work in finance more than financial engineering (M&A instead of quantitative researcher etc). So I'm interested in few MiF in Europe : ESCP, HEC, ESSEC, EDHEC, STGallen and LSB. I am interested in knowing my possibilities at universities with my current profile, so any assistance is greatly welcomed. Also, if you have other suggestions for MiF in Europe it will be nice to tell me!

Academic:
- gmat : target 700 - 720 (today I'm around Q50 and V35)
- GPA : ~3 (12.8/20) the two last year, can be explained by personal problems, but close to 4 the 2 previous one (15.1/20)
- TOEIC 980/990 but I can take TOEFL if needed

experience:
- Natixis CIB, mostly software but close to finance (3 months)
- VP of a 6 figures student run company (a little consulting firm in our uni) (volutary job during 15 months)
- Maths Institute, research on IA (6 weeks)

Extra:
- Lot of sports and achievements in it (france championship in volley, foot during 10 years as a captain, gym, ...)

I'm going to study at KTH in Sweden for 4 months (one of the most renowned uni there) and after that I will have to complete a 6 months internship before integrating my MiF in order to be graduated.

I would like to know what are my chances to integrate the best MiF and on what I have to work in order to accomplish that. Thank you very much!

Dear Team,
My sincere apologies in advance if my profile seems laughable due to my GPA.

👋 Hey alcbee123,

Here is a detailed profile evaluation for you!

➡️ With a BA in Fashion Design, your profile presents a unique blend of experiences. While a 2.0 GPA is a concern, your circumstances surrounding your father's demise and a restrictive family background contextualise it. The subjective grading system of your college further underscores the GPA's non-comparative nature.

➡️ Your work journey is diverse and impressive. Starting in a retail startup during COVID's peak, which is now on the verge of acquisition, you've demonstrated adaptability and ambition. Your roles have spanned from production management to e-commerce and marketing, showcasing your multifaceted skill set. Your internships and subsequent positions, especially with India's leading eyewear brand and working on PR for iconic luxury brands, reflect your upward trajectory.

➡️ Your current role in the family business further aligns with your MBA aspirations, emphasising your interest in e-commerce and tech solutions for retail. Moreover, your numerous volunteer initiatives, including those aimed at supporting women and children, emphasise a commitment to social impact.

➡️ Considering your GMAT score of 680 and varied experiences, top 50 US B-schools are within reach. However, a compelling application is crucial. Your story of resilience, adaptability, and ambition should be central. Address the GPA in the optional essay, emphasising the personal challenges you faced and the subjective nature of your college's grading.

➡️ Given your background and goals, consider schools known for entrepreneurship, innovation, and social impact. Explore schools like Babson, Boston, University of Maryland, Sunny Buffalo and Foster.
