Hey it would be great if someone could review my profile below:

Background:
- Indian, Male, 27
- Primary Education in the Middle East (CBSE), 12 years
- B.Tech in Computer Science for NIT Karnataka, CGPA: 5.9/10

Work Experience
- Total experience - 5 Years
- 2.5 years in an MNC as Big Data Consultant. Spent some time in Germany, Dubai, Gurgaon, and Bangalore at the client location. 1 promotion during that time.
- 2.5 years spent on my own startup as Head of Product and Growth. Launched an App, which ran for a while, but decided to shut it down.

GMAT: 1st attempt 660. ( About to give my 2nd attempt in a few days, mock score averages around 720 now)

Extracurriculars
- Volunteer with local organization for last 2 years
- Play Tennis and Football frequently

Goal
- Work in South East Asia
- Work as Product Manager (or an equivalent role) in a big firm/startup

Targets
- NUS, Nanyang
( I know I can't have only two target schools, I need help looking more options in the region)

Questions

1. Since I'm looking to work in S.E. Asia, can you suggest other good colleges in the region?.
2. I know my CGPA is low, and I'm hoping my next GMAT score + Work Ex + Essays can help offset this a little. Anything else that can be done?
3. Any other general advice for my profile would be great.

Thanks in advance!

Hello guptrish,

Thanks for writing in.

The international exposure, as well as the start-up experience, are strong elements in your profile and should be stressed upon in your essays. Even though the start-up failed, you will need to focus on your learning from the episode and how the same convinced you to apply for an MBA.

The CGPA is definitely a cause for concern. Besides aiming for a GMAT score upwards of 720, you will need to put forth a stellar set of essays that appropriately portray your diverse experiences, your strengths, as well as your achievements. However, more importantly, the essay should clearly showcase how the MBA fits in with your plans and your career goals post the same. Remember, your short-term and long-term goals should be in sync with your existing experience :-)

Hope this helped.

Good luck!

Hello guptrish

A good school will evaluate your candidature based on admissions factors mentioned here.
In that case you have some things going strongly for you- Mid-East & other international experience adds quality and diversity to your profile. (which otherwise can be negatively impacted by the Indian IT Male tage :-))
Goals are organic and realistic. You could read more on that here
Diversity factor will need to be fleshed out (showcase the impact of your extracurricular on your life or the life of others)
However work ex is something that is not detailed enough to comment on. Showcase your career progress and key achievements in these 5 years.
SE Asia has NUS NTU as already identified by you. INSEAD and HKUST, CEIBS etc are also good choices. But speculating on school selection is something that is not possible by looking at a laundry list of your profile. It requires a lot of meaningful discovery of hidden details in you profile.
With your background retaking the GMAT is definitely a good idea with a 720/730+ at least.
Reach out should you have any further questions.

Consider the following points guptrish:
  1. The work profile is the clear star in your case so make sure to leverage that fully. It isn't clear, but what have you been up to since the startup shut down? If on a break, read here and cut it short.
  2. The GPA will be a pretty tough one. Just GMAT may not be good enough, you should look to develop a parallel coursework. Read here and also address why that was the case in your optional essays; especially if there were backs too in there.
  3. The ECs sound good; just participation may not be good enough though. Think about how you can showcase impact on those areas too.
  4. Apart from the ones you have already, INSEAD will be good to target (assuming India is out). Be cautious in exploring programs in the land of the dragon - cultural/language issues abound.

Hope this helps some.

Cheers,
