A recommendation from your current manager, even after a few months, can be valuable if it highlights your recent contributions and growth. However, if the project managers from your previous role can provide more detailed and impactful feedback on your skills and performance, their recommendations might carry more weight. It’s best to prioritize recommendations from those who can speak most effectively to your strengths and relevant experience.

Some schools require 2 mandatory LoR's or (1 mandatory + 1 optional) LoR. In such cases, it'd be ideal to have both your current manager and previous manager submit their recommendations.

When selecting recommenders, two factors are important to keep in mind: proximity (i.e. how close you've worked with them) and timeline (i.e. how long have you worked with them). If you feel your current manager can provide enough depth and instances to showcase your professional arc and traits, go for it. If not, the previous manger would be better. For consulting roles, typically, project managers tend to be better fits to provide LoR's than reporting manager, but this decision would again have to be made based on the two factors I've indicated.

For more insights and best practices on LoR's, check out this write-up.

Hope this helps some.

Hey GMAT Club community,
I have a couple of quick questions about recommendations:
  1. I just joined a new firm in July, and my reporting manager is okay with giving me a recommendation based on what I've done so far. Do you think a recommendation from someone I've only worked with for a few months is worth it, or should I go for one from my previous manager instead?
  2. In my previous consulting role, I worked with a bunch of project managers rather than my reporting manager. I feel like they might give a stronger recommendation since we collaborated on most of the projects I worked on. Should I reach out to them instead of my previous reporting manager?
I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Thanks a ton!

In general, schools are looking for recommenders who know the candidate very well, on the basis of an experience that is:
1. As long as possible.
2. As intense as possible.
3. Experience that is preferably work-related.

Other factors to consider:
The level of excitement that the recommender demonstrates, and the reasons for this excitement (supporting examples), are most important.
Also, the longer and more intense the acquaintance is, the better.
Recommendations that describe the candidate's background in the exact same industry name mentioned in the career plan are preferred.
Recommendations that attest to the candidate's leadership and management background are preferred.
A lukewarm recommendation or one that reflects little acquaintance will not do the job, no matter who provided it.
