I think it doesn't matter much if the person who is recommending you has an MBA degree from the HBS or any other top college. Your recommender should be the person who has worked with you closely and has evaluated your work. He/ she should be familiar with your working style, work ethic, accomplishments and your contribution to the company and should in a position to substantiate them with powerful examples.
From the detail you have provided, I think your principal has worked closely with you on a project, and if he is in an evaluative position, he may be the right recommender for you.
Also, not all recommenders are familiar with the MBA LOR process. You can guide them about how this process works.
