The graph represents the results of a survey taken by focus groups each shown a different version of an upcoming commercial for a sports car.

Each version had a different amount of content showing the car in fast-driving scenes.

After the group viewed the commercial, each member was asked two questions: "Did you feel that the car was sporty?" and "How likely are you to purchase this car?"

The position of the circles on the left indicate how much fast-driving content (F) was in the version of the commercial show and the % of viewers who found the car to be 'sporty' (S). The relative size of the circles indicates how likely the members of the group were to purchase the car (L). The bigger the circle, the more likely they were to purchase.

Use the drop-down menus to fill in the blanks in each of the following statements based on the information given by the graph.

1. If the relationship between L and S were inversed, then the greatest effect on the graph would be to the__________of the circles.

A. Size
B. Vertical position
C. Horizontal Position

2. If the relationship between L and S were inversed, then the greatest effect on the graph would be to the_________

A. Circle A
B. Circle B
C. Circle C
D. Circle D

3. If the relationship between L and S were inversed, then were would be a__________correlation between F and L.

A. Positive
B. Negative

4. If the relationship between L and S were inversed, then were would be a__________correlation between S and L.

A. Positive
B. Negative

5. If the relationship between L and S were inversed, then were would be a__________correlation between F and S.

A. Positive
B. Negative

Spoiler: :: OA
1. A. Size
2. A. Circle A
3. B. Negative
4. B. Negative
5. A. Positive

1) A, Since the relationship between L & S determines the size of the circle
2) A,Greatest effect would be on A
3) Negative,If the relationship is inversed then with every increase of F , L will decrease, since size will decrease
4) Negative,If the relationship is inversed then with every increase of L , S will decrease, since size will decrease
5) Positive, since when L will increase S will decrease & F will decrease ,so there is a positive correlation between S&F

Hi,
What do we mean by 'inverse L and S' here?

Explanation

Take a few steps to answer this question

  • See the diagram with full attention
  • Read the text and make connection of the text with the diagram
  • Answer the questions

By reading the text and seeing the diagram we are easily able to understand that

  • As the fast driving content (F) increases the % of people who think car was sporty (S) also increases.
  • As the fast driving content (F) and the % of people who think car was sporty (S) increases the number of people who said they will purchase the car (L) also increases.

Now attempt the questions

1. If the relationship between L and S were reversed, then the greatest effect on the graph would be to the__________of the circles.

With the reference of the fact above we can say that when the relationship between L and S reversed the bubbles A, B, C and D will be changed. Few people will purchase the car when the % of people who think car was sporty (S) increases and hence the biggest bubble will become the smallest bubble and the vice versa.

Answer: Size

2. If the relationship between L and S were reversed, then the greatest effect on the graph would be to the_________

When the relationship between L and S reversed the size of the bubble will also be reversed and the largest bubble will become the smallest and the smallest will become the largest. So the size of A will become the largest.

PS: The OA, in my point of view, is misleading, when the relationship between the L and S reversed then the greatest effect would be on both A and D, A will become equals D and D will become equal to A.

3. If the relationship between L and S were inversed, then were would be a__________correlation between F and L.

With the current situation the relationship is positive, when S increases L also increases so when the relationship reversed and when increase in the value of S decrease the value of L then this relationship will become negative.

Answer: Negative

4. If the relationship between L and S were inversed, then were would be a__________correlation between S and L.

The answer and reasoning is same as the question number 3 above.

Answer: Negative

5. If the relationship between L and S were inversed, then were would be a__________correlation between F and S.

The current relation is when F increases S also increases, if the relationship reversed then the decrease in the value of F also decreases the value of S. So the relationship will remain positive and will just change the direction of the relationship from + + to - - .

Answer: Positive
