I Believe the answer is D.

It seems that the king was ruling prior to 1460 and coins were present at that time too.

We can't question the circulation of coin but we might question the ruling of King and hence I suppose it should be D.

Will wait for the OA

Okay ..As per Option D: if the king was ruling prior 1460 and after 1470, than as the passage states then the play must have been written between 1430 to 1471.
Option D: strengthen the arguments

Option E: states that since the design of coin was already out prior its minting and circulation , than play could have been written before 1430, thereby weakens the conclusion

IMO E

E provides a potential reason that the coin could have been mentioned in the play had it been written prior to 1431. D does not provide any reason to think it was written after 1471. IMO E is the answer.

Think its D.E talks about seeing the design.Seeing the design and put into circulation are two different things.

The concern isn't when the coin was circulated it is determining whether or not the coin being mentioned prior to 1431 is possible. E provides evidence that a coin of that name was known and written about prior to 1431 therefore it is possible that the coin could have been written about in the play before 1431 even if it had not been in official circulation until then. D does nothing to alter maximum date of 1471 as both dates mentioned still fall between 1431 and 1471.

Oops!! I missed a critical point. I thought we need to look in the span 1460 to 1471 and NOT 1431 ( numbers got mixed up)

Thanks! I agree it should be E then !!

Why can't the answer be B since it talks about a coin which was minted way before the concerned period and the play discusses about that coin.

Why can't the answer be B since it talks about a coin which was minted way before the concerned period and the play discusses about that coin.
The conclusion is given with some reasoning to back it up. To weaken the reasoning must be weakened which can be done either by weakening the reason directly by finding a fault in it or by bringing an additional information that offers reasons to doubt the conclusion.

The play Mankind must have been written between 1431 and 1471. It cannot have been written before 1431 for in that year the rose noble, a coin mentioned in the play, was first circulated. The play cannot have been written after 1471 since in that year King Henry VI died, and he is mentioned as a living monarch in the play’s dedication.

The argument would be most seriously weakened if which one of the following were discovered?

(A) The Royal Theatre Company includes the play on a list of those performed in 1480. - WRONG. Irrelevant.

(B) Another coin mentioned in the play was first minted in 1422. - WRONG. Does look good but we have another better option in E. Though it does have its fault-lines open to make it wrong.

(C) The rose noble was neither minted nor circulated after 1486. - WRONG. The period mentioned here is irrelevant.

(D) Although Henry VI was deposed in 1461, he was briefly restored to the throne in 1470. - WRONG. Irrelevant

(E) In a letter written in early 1428, a merchant told of having seen the design for a much-discussed new coin called the “rose noble.” - CORRECT. Directly contradicts the reasoning offered to support the conclusion by bringing additional information.

Answer E.

We're trying to figure out when the play was written, not when it was performed. The play might have been performed in many different years. If my local theatre company performs Hamlet this year, that doesn't weaken the argument that Hamlet was written in 1623.
