Could someone please explain why it is A and not D?
The exclusivity in A is the teachers access to the kitchen, but in D is the dinners at Cafe Delice being made in the kitchen. How do we interpret the question to help us decide between these two options?

Explanation taken from Manhattan Prep forum:

Argument Core:

Conclusion
Kate must sometimes shop at local health food store on Wed's

Evidence
On Wed's, Kate usually buys guava.
Local health food store is only place Kate can buy guava.

Analysis of Core:
Looks like a pretty airtight conclusion. How did we get there?

We know that Kate sometimes buys guava and that you must buy guava at a certain place, so we can conclude with certainty that Kate sometimes goes to that place.

PUT IT INTO MORE OF AN ABSTRACT RECIPE
2 premises ... 1 most statement and 1 conditional:
- for most X's (wed's), Y happens (kate buys guava)
- Z (going to local health store) is the only way Y happens

Conclusion:
some X's (wed's) involve Z (going to local health store)

EVEN MORE SYMBOLICALLY, IF YOU LIKE THAT
Most X are Y.
Y --> Z
-------------
Some X are Z

(A)
- Most X's (CD dinners) are Y (prepared in CI kitchen).
- Z (CI teacher) is the only way that Y happens.
Thus, some X's must involve Z.

Looks pretty good.

(B) Strength of language mismatches make this one not seem worth a close read. Both premises are conditional and the conclusion is also conditional.

(C)
- Most X's (CD dinners) are Y (prepared in CI kitchen)
- Z (CI teacher) is one way that Y happens.

We can stop there. Y does not guarantee us of Z. All teachers are guaranteed access to the CI kitchen, but the fact that something was prepared in the kitchen doesn't guarantee us that a CI teacher made it.

(D)
- Most X's (CI teachers) are Y (allowed to use kitchen)
- if it's Z (CD dinner) then it's kinda like Y (prepared in kitchen)

Stop there. Not a true match between the Y concepts. More importantly, Y doesn't guarantee Z.

(E)
Most X's (CD dinners) are Y (prepared by CI teachers)
Z (allowed to use CI kitchen) guarantees kinda like Y (teacher at CI)

Stop there. Not a true match between Y's and Y doesn't guarantee Z.

The correct answer is (A).

One good way to attack this one, if you hate translating these into abstract recipes, is simply to look for another airtight argument.

Only (A) and (B) are valid arguments. Hope this helps.

I usually strugle with this kind of questions. Would anyone propose how to analyze these better?

On Wednesdays, Kate usually buys some guava juice. But the only place she can buy guava juice is the local health food store. It follows that she must sometimes shop at the local health food store on Wednesdays.

The argument above is most similar in its pattern of reasoning to which one of the following arguments?

(A) Only teachers at the Culinary Institute are allowed to use the institute's main kitchen. Most dinners at Cafe Delice are prepared in that kitchen. So at least some dinners at Cafe Delice must be prepared by Culinary Institute teachers.
at least wording looks promising and other possibilities are ruled out therefore let us hang on to it

(B) All dinners at Cafe Delice are prepared in the main kitchen of the Culinary Institute. But only teachers at the institute are allowed to use that kitchen. So the dinners at Cafe Delice must be prepared by Culinary Institute teachers.
This an air tight argument and no other possibilities which is not the case for the above argument therefore out

(C) Most dinners at Cafe Delice are prepared in the main kitchen of the Culinary Institute. All the teachers at the institute are allowed to use that kitchen. So at least some dinners at Cafe Delice must be prepared by Culinary Institute teachers.
This doesn't guarantee that the dishes will come necessarily from the kitchen therefore out

(D) Most teachers at the Culinary Institute are allowed to use the institute's main kitchen. Dinners at Cafe Delice are only prepared in that kitchen. So dinners at Cafe Delice must sometimes be prepared by Culinary Institute teachers.
This not a sure shot possibility there is a scope of other possibilities that the food may be prepared at some other place therefore out

(E) Only teachers at the Culinary Institute are allowed to use the main kitchen of the institute. Dinners at Cafe Delice are usually prepared by Culinary Institute teachers. So dinners at Cafe Delice must sometimes be prepared in the main kitchen of the Culinary Institute.
This however makes the possibility of some other candidates cooking the dinner this not a close knit argument therefore out

Therefore IMO A

We need something that sets up the following logic: Situation happens sometimes (A) --> some condition necessary for that situation (B)--> Sometimes that condition happens for the situation to happen. Remember that the correct answer could be in any order here (C).

(A) Only teachers at the Culinary Institute are allowed to use the institute's main kitchen. Most dinners at Cafe Delice are prepared in that kitchen. So at least some dinners at Cafe Delice must be prepared by Culinary Institute teachers.
BINGO: Situation (most dinners are prepared in the kitchen) (A)--> Necessary Condition (Only teachers are allowed in the kitchen) (B)--> At least some dinners are prepared by teachers since teachers are the only ones that can prepare in the kitchen (C)

(B) All dinners at Cafe Delice are prepared in the main kitchen of the Culinary Institute. But only teachers at the institute are allowed to use that kitchen. So the dinners at Cafe Delice must be prepared by Culinary Institute teachers.
Incorrect: This is saying All instead of the usual/sometimes situation --> only teachers are allowed (B) --> all dinners must be prepared by teachers

(C) Most dinners at Cafe Delice are prepared in the main kitchen of the Culinary Institute. All the teachers at the institute are allowed to use that kitchen. So at least some dinners at Cafe Delice must be prepared by Culinary Institute teachers.
This is wrong because dinners could be prepared by other ppl that are also allowed

(D) Most teachers at the Culinary Institute are allowed to use the institute's main kitchen. Dinners at Cafe Delice are only prepared in that kitchen. So dinners at Cafe Delice must sometimes be prepared by Culinary Institute teachers.
Again, not necessarily, even though they are allowed dinners could be made by other people

Not necessarily, these teachers could be making these dinners elsewhere whenever they make dinner.

(B) All dinners at Cafe Delice are prepared in the main kitchen of the Culinary Institute. But only teachers at the institute are allowed to use that kitchen. So the dinners at Cafe Delice must be prepared by Culinary Institute teachers. - WRONG. No link between allowed teachers preparing dinners.

(C) Most dinners at Cafe Delice are prepared in the main kitchen of the Culinary Institute. All the teachers at the institute are allowed to use that kitchen. So at least some dinners at Cafe Delice must be prepared by Culinary Institute teachers. - WRONG. No link between allowed teachers preparing dinners.

- WRONG. Not sure whether dinners are prepared in the main kitchen by teachers. There is no link.

There elements are there - Wednesday(X), buying guava juice(Y) and local health food store(Z).
On X Y happens i.e. X ----> Y
But Y happens on Z i.e. Y ----> Z
Thus, Z(sometimes) happens on X i.e. Y ----> Z(sometimes) ----> X

Answer A.
