Re: Jamboree and GMAT Club Contest: When a timamollo or candle wife, a [#permalink]
QUESTION #11:

When a timamollo or candle wife, a Pedi chief's bride, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.

A. When a timamollo or candle wife, a Pedi chief's bride, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle. Here timamollo & candle wife seems two different entity. Hence ambiguous in meaning.
B. When the bride of a Pedi chief, a timamollo or candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle. Here it seems that Pedi chief wife may be timamollo or candle wife. ambiguity remains
C. When a timamollo, a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle. Seems correct and the term 'timamollo' refers to Chief's candle wife.
D. When a timamollo or candle wife arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from the Pedi chief's bride. Here meaning changes..when either timamollo or candle wife arrives, but relitting done by some third entity - that is Pedi chief's bride, which is different than the other two.
E. When a timamollo or a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle. Here ambiguity remains and seems timamollo and Pedi chief's candle wife is different.

Re: Jamboree and GMAT Club Contest: When a timamollo or candle wife, a [#permalink]
A. When a timamollo or candle wife, a Pedi chief's bride, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
a Pedi chief's bride should be part of dependent clause and not just a modifier . The meaning of this sentence is awkward.

B. When the bride of a Pedi chief, a timamollo or candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle. Correct
This sentence conveys the intended meaning correctly.

C. When a timamollo, a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
It changes the intended meaning of the sentence -- a Pedi chief's candle wife.

D. When a timamollo or candle wife arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from the Pedi chief's bride.
The meaning changes as from this sentence we are not clear whether Pedi chief's bride is a timanollo or candle wife.

E. When a timamollo or a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
When a timamollo or a Pedi chief's candle wife is not even a clause.

When' arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.

A. When a timamollo or candle wife, a Pedi chief's bride, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
B. When the bride of a Pedi chief, a timamollo or candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
C. When a timamollo, a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
D. When a timamollo or candle wife arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from the Pedi chief's bride.
E. When a timamollo or a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.

answer should be A..
Since the terms ' a timamollo' or 'candle wife' could be hypothetical or even if existing, we are not required to be knowing all this, the original meaning can be any of the two
1) when any of the two person ' a timamollo' or 'candle wife', who is a Pedi chief's bride comes to village .. and so on..
none of the other choices follow the intended meaning..
although the sentence could have been slightly better with.." candle wife, a Pedi chief's bride, or a timamollo

or
2) a timamollo or 'candle wife', both of which are same terminology for a Pedi chief's bride..
still only A follows the meaning and rest changing the meaning..

Answer for the above questions should be 'B'. Options C/D/E are directly out because of the comparison issue. We left with A & B. Between the two 'B' is concise & elements are compared correctly

Re: Jamboree and GMAT Club Contest: When a timamollo or candle wife, a [#permalink]

Here "a Pedi chief's bride" is the prime subject. thus keeping it in appositives make the sentence less preferable.

B. When the bride of a Pedi chief, a timamollo or candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
The sentence properly makes "the bride of a Pedi chief" as subject. Further "timamollo or candle wife" is used to express alternative words.
Correct answer.

C. When a timamollo, a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
"candle wife" is used as alternative word to clarify the term "Timamollo". To keep intended meaning, they should be kept close.

D. When a timamollo or candle wife arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from the Pedi chief's bride.
An information of the original sentence "the bride of a Pedi chief" is missing.

E. When a timamollo or a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
"a Pedi chief's candle wife" is awkward.

So, Correct Answer (B)

When a timamollo or candle wife, a Pedi chief's bride, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.

A. When a timamollo or candle wife, a Pedi chief's bride, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle. - Ambiguity on who is the Pedi chief's bride. Also pronoun her can refer to timamollo or candle wife.
B. When the bride of a Pedi chief, a timamollo or candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle. - Correct. Noun timamollo or candle wife correctly modifies the bride. Her clearly refers to the bride
C. When a timamollo, a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle. - Changes the Meaning
D. When a timamollo or candle wife arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from the Pedi chief's bride. - Changes the Meaning. Fires are relit from the candle, not the bride.
E. When a timamollo or a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle. - Changes the meaning

This looks correct as it is.

B. When the bride of a Pedi chief, a timamollo or candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.

Here appositive modifier "a timamollo or candle wife" illogically modifies Pedi chief, while it should have modified Pedi Chief's bride.

C. When a timamollo, a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.

The expression a Pedi chief's candle wife is wrong. It looks like candle wife is different from normal (really? :)) wives.\

D. When a timamollo or candle wife arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from the Pedi chief's bride.

Here the way this sentence is written it looks like a timamollo or candle wife is different from a Pedi Chief's bride.

E. When a timamollo or a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.

Again as in option C, candle wife is wrong also comma after wife is not justified.

No specific person is pointed but we are talking about specific bride who is candle wife or timamollo-- Here we are talking in general which is not the intended meaning i guess.Rather we are talking about THE specific bride.

B. When the bride of a Pedi chief, a timamollo or candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
Correct. Here were are talking about specific person among the group ie. THE Bride--which bride?- who is candle wife or timamollo.

C. When a timamollo, a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
Change of meaning from the original sentence- Here the definition of timamollo is given, a definition which is wrong and makes no sense. In original sentence we are given Chiefs Bride not wife..

D. When a timamollo or candle wife arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from the Pedi chief's bride.
from the Pedi Chief's Bride- It gives wrong meaning the fires were relit from her candle and not from herself.

E. When a timamollo or a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
Here we have two entities timamollo or Pedi chief's candle wife-- so again given meaning is changed Given meaning is Chief's Bride is candle wife or timamollo

When a timamollo or candle wife, a Pedi chief's bride, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.

B is the correct answer

A. When a timamollo or candle wife, a Pedi chief's bride, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
The article "a" in "a Pedi chief's bride" is incorrect since we did know her, so the article "the" should have been used instead. In addition, "a timamollo or candle wife" makes us think that there are 2 persons, thus we don't know "her" refers to whom => Incorrect

B. When the bride of a Pedi chief, a timamollo or candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
"The" here is used precisely. We know that "timamollo or candle wife" is the bridge of a Pedi chief. => B is the correct answer

C. When a timamollo, a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
Timamollo and candle wife are the same person. So "the" should have been used instead of "a" in "a Pedi chief's candle wife" => Incorrect

D. When a timamollo or candle wife arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from the Pedi chief's bride.
The usage of "Pedi chief's candle wife" in the end of the sentence makes readers misunderstand that "a timamollo or candle wife" and "the Pedi chief's bride" are different people => Incorrect

E. When a timamollo or a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.
The usage of "comma" after "candle wife" separates the subject and the verb => Incorrect

A. When a timamollo or candle wife, a Pedi chief's bride, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle - Pedi's chief's bride seems to modify timamollo or candle wife and her refers back to timamollo or candle wife. The sentence seems correct without any issues. Correct answer.
B. When the bride of a Pedi chief, a timamollo or candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle. - timamollo or candle wife seems to refer to Pedi chief which is incorrect.
C. When a timamollo, a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle. - a Pedi chief's candle wife seems to modify timamollo which is wrong.
D. When a timamollo or candle wife arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from the Pedi chief's bride. - Placement of Pedi chief's bride seems to change the original meaning of the sentence. Hence wrong.
E. When a timamollo or a Pedi chief's candle wife, arrives at the royal house, all the fires in the village are doused and re-lit directly from her candle.- "a timamollo or a Pedi chief's candle wife" is wrong as Pedi chief should modify both timamollo and candle wife.

Hence answer choice A is correct.
