Carol Gilligan’s research suggests that by the time they reach early adolescence, many young women have lost much of the confidence being present as a little girl.

(A) being present as a little girl

(B) being present as a little girl

(C) that was present when a little girl

(D) that was present in them as little girls

(E) that had been present when each was a little girl

IMO the answer is D, though I was wondering why A and B are having same?

(A) being present as a little girl

(B) being present as a little girl

(C) that was present when a little girl

(D) that was present in them as little girls

(E) that had been present when each was a little girl

Hence, Answer is D

I carelessly selected (E) - need to revise the rules.

I realise E is incorrect as past perfect is used to clarify the sequencing of two related events in time - where are the two events though? lol

Not sure why A and D are the same here.

that was present in them as little girls.

I have doubt in option D.
That is modifying confidence, correct.
And if I read it like "confidence that was present in them as little girls"
It seems that confidence and little girls are in equivalent form.
I might be wrong but see some issues with meaning.

Please tell me if I am wrong with explanation.
