Question to experts and to people who cracked GMAT.

How do you decide - to use pretinking or to check options?
Depending on question?
Or maybe you have worked some rules for you, when to use it? Maybe in particular types of questions?

The question above is the bright illustration when it is possible to prethink. I knew exactly, what kind of answer I would be look for. Before staring into the options.

But this skill is weak. I would like to improve it very much.

How do we choose between B and C?

For B, if "deer ticks feeding off whitefooted mice invariably drop off their hosts between noon and sunset, regardless of time of attachment", this means that they might attach to the host 1 second before sunset and then drop off at sunset, consequently not feeding at all. So B makes sense.

Could you please shed some light? Thanks

Since we have to draw a conclusion here, this question is of must be true category.

A. Extreme answer choice with new info.
B. The use of sometimes gives us a 50-50 answer. Sometimes they can feed for longer hours sometimes they only feed for a minute or lesser before sunset. Dropping off their host is a definite action that will take place during sunset. Hence, this answer choice is a strong contender. 
C. The ticks start feeding from afternoon till sunset, the time when mice are in their nest (since they are strictly nocturnal). Hence there is a strong probability that the ticks drop off their hosts' in their nests.
D. Could be true & out of scope. It doesn't matter if the mice know or they don't.
E. New information not required for us to answer the question raised in the stem.

Now we have to choose between B & C. We should go for C as it is a sure shot answer.

Strong statements are often considered wrong for must be true/inference/conclusion type questions. We have no info of this.

(B) Deer ticks sometimes drop off their hosts without having fed at all.

Passage says "Ticks don't leave the host until they are fully feed. So wrong choice.

(C) Deer ticks that feed off white-footed mice drop off their hosts in the hosts’ nests.

(D) White-footed mice to which deer ticks have attached themselves are not aware of the ticks.

Nothing like this given in the passage.

(E) White-footed mice are hosts to stable numbers of deer ticks, regardless of season of the year.

No info like this is present.

Seems this old question was never answered ("How do you decide to use pretinking or to check options?")

In an Inference question such as this one, pre-thinking is not really required.
 
Treat it like a comprehension question. Just understand the paragraph and take note of the information it contains.

Then check the options: see which one is definitely true according to information in the passage.

For argument-based questions and for resolve/explain (paradox/discrepancy) questions, pre-thinking is useful and recommended.

We need to identify the option,which is true based on given information.

(A) Deer ticks all attach themselves to whitefooted mice during the same part of the day, regardless of day of attachment.
Time of detachment is given, we can say about attachment.
(B) Deer ticks sometimes drop off their hosts without having fed at all.
Possible but not much support.
(C) Deer ticks that feed off white-footed mice drop off their hosts in the hosts’ nests.
"White-footed mice are strictly nocturnal animals that spend all daytime hours in their underground nests."
Here strictly is the key that makes Option C true.

(D) White-footed mice to which deer ticks have attached themselves are not aware of the ticks.
Not supported.

(E) White-footed mice are hosts to stable numbers of deer ticks, regardless of season of the year.
Not supported.

Keep it very simple - you know the time when they(ticks) detach (or say) drop off. Tell me, do you know the  time when they get attached?

This simple question will put you in a position where your probability of answering will suffer.

What if? They get attached at night ANDDD drop off at day time? - Your answer can go wrong in this situation. Basically, what you answered was based on your assumption. There was no information about that.

And inference questions are MUST BE TRUE questions. With the current information in hand, you won't be confirmed about your answer choice B.
