An investor purchased x shares of stock at a certain price. If the stock then increased in price $0.25 per share and the total increase for the x shares was $12.50. how many shares of stock had been purchased?

(A) 25
(B) 50
(C) 75
(D) 100
(E) 125

Initial price = xy
New price = (x+ 0.25 ) * y

difference will be the increased price = 0.25 y = 12.50
y =50

Total shares = Total increase in share price / per share increase price = 12.50/0.25 = 1250/25 = 50

Let X be total number of shares..
price increase in 1 share is the same as price increase of X shares (just that increased amount will multiply by total number of shares i.e X)

We are given with the information that,
"total increase in value of 1 share = $0.25,
and total increase in value for X shares = $12.50"

or
0.25 X = 12.50
X= 12.50/0.25
X= 50..
option B

Word problem.

Let x = # of shares purchased, y = share price, z = book value

Equation 1: xy = z

If y increased by 0.25 and the book value increased by 12.50, then...

Equation 2: x(0.25+y) = 12.50 + z

x = (12.50 + z)/(0.25 + y)

(12.50 + z)/(0.25 + y) = z/y
z = 50y

Plug z = 50y back into x = z/y --> x = 50y/y --> x = 50
