Really hating this scholarship essay. What a pain.
At least it has no bearing on admissions!
In case anyone is interested, I got some clarification on the scholarship essay. The Admissions Committee rarely reads any of the scholarship essays, but the AdCom (not the FinAid Office) does actually decide the annual scholarship recipients based on the materials in candidates' applications.
The scholarship essay is used by the Financial Aid office to see if candidates are eligible for any special earmarked funds that are special some way. Like an alum may have decided this year to put up some money for a special scholarship just for this year. The financial aid office knows the criteria for these sources of funds, and uses the scholarship essays to see whether candidates qualify. I was also told that the Financial Aid office usually doesn't have any other materials from a person's application, but may refer to it if the office has any questions.
