Two more major league baseball players tested positive for steroids in March, bringing to five the number of players who have tested positive this year.

A.bringing -- What brings the number to five is the act of the two players testing positive. the adverbial modifier brings out the intent clearly. Hence, the correct choice.

B. and brings -- awful SV mistake
C. and it brings -- 1. same thing as in B; 2. no reference for 'it'
D. and it brought ----no reference for 'it'
E. and brought --- meaning change
