Pro INSEAD:
* I would join the work force in 2016 and since I'm already in the 30s, I think it can be important.
* The program cost is about the half of Tuck's.
* Great brand in Europe.
* Great network in Europe.
* Great placement in consulting.
Doubt about INSEAD:
* A lot of people think statistics are massively inflated by student with company sponsorship.
* A lot of people argue that it's not so easy, even though possible, switching to consulting without a previos business experience:
That's a huge point of discussion, it's important for people like me to figure out whether we'll have great possibilites to switch. Is INSEAD mainly a
business school for people who already get their dream job or it's also a concrete means to gain the tools to chase a dream for people
like me.
* It's a strong brand in Europe but in the end the only two countries I'll be able to work in are UK and Italy since I can't speak other
European languages (Iwould have to learn French in order to get my degree but not at such a level to allow me finding a job just as
the program ends).
Pro Tuck:
* The two-years MBA is a great life experience.
* Can give me the opportunity to work in US.
* Thanks to the interniship, I could have more opportunity for a career change.
I'm really struggling guys. At the moment I'm slightly leaning towards Tuck cause I really want to switch career. But opinion on INSEAD
are quite different. Lots of people think is a great school for aiming at consulting, other think that it's quite overrated.
Please help.
Thank you all
Did you get accepted already or is this a hypothetical thread?
Well if you are accepted already. Congrats on both schools!
There is a great TED talk about making hard choices. Its called "how to make hard choices" given by Ruth Chang. You can search for it on google I highly recommend it, it will give you a new perspective on how to decide between two hard choices. (I won't link.. maybe rules against it on this forum) But it is going to guide you in how you think when choosing between 2 things.
I think you should go to Tuck. Let me explain why.
You being above 30? doesnt really matter. Age is really a number and having 1 more year of work experience when you die is not going to make a difference. You are already 30+ so the difference is really minimal. You should take this out of the equation when evaluation.
Also stop thinking about what other people say. It is all just white noise. What they say doesn't matter.
Now the choice you have is between 2year vs 1year.
In order to decide between this you need to think about your previous experience. What do you do? Did you work for a prestigious firm? If you did, I think you can get by with a 1 year program and move into MBB. If you didn't its going to be a bit tougher, not impossible. But a little more difficult with the 1 year program.
If you do a 2 year program, you can do an internship over the summer at a consulting firm your chances at MBB is going to be a lot greater.
2 year programs are much more enriching and much 'better' than the 1 year. You have more time to think
Only drawback of 2 year is the opportunity cost of not working. But it doesnt seem that you care about the cost, but this could be an issue. But for the reasons I mentioned above, go with 2 year for MBB
>> in order to maximize your chances for MBB you should choose TUCK for this decision.
Do you want an international experience? or an American experience.
Well you are Italian so american experience may also be an international experience. However, the student population of INSEAD is going to be really diverse vs TUCK being mostly american.
>> If this is a minor topic, you can skip it. This may or may not be a big differentiator.
Where do you want to work afterwards? Italy? UK?( Europe?) or USA?
If your answer is Italy or UK or Europe you should go with Insead. If you want USA, you definitely need to choose TUCK.
Also it is easier to go from TUCK to Europe than Insead to USA. Better brand. ETC ETC. You will have 'more' choices with TUCK
>> Unless you have a definite place you want to work go with TUCK. You will have more freedom to choose.
Brand?
>>Tuck no doubt. IVY league + brand recognition is far superior than INSEAD.
Tuition?
>> This goes to INSEAD.
Conclusion: Tuck will give you 'more' choices of after school location. Will give you 'better' experience, its longer. Has better brand. Up your chances at MBB/ change career, through internship.
The only cons for TUCK is that it is 1 year longer than Insead and the tuition. You should not factor in your age, SERIOUSLY. This is only a con if you think about the opportunity cost. If you dont mind the opportunity cost, which I am assuming since you haven't mentioned it, this might not even be a con. As for tuition, well.. nothing I can say. But if you want to work in the US and have an internship.. it is the price you have to pay
Go with TUCK. I think it may be the right decision for you.
PS: I prefer 1 year over 2 year so don't think that I am being biased towards 2 years. I would choose 1 year over 2 year. However for your goals and situation 2 year makes the most sense.
Kudos!/
