Native American Male
Age - 23 (now)
Planning to apply for Fall 2017/might shoot an app out for Fall 2016 rounds to get used to the process
GMAT- 720

Undergrad - State School in Midwest, BS Industrial Engineering, GPA 3.09 (extenuating circumstances and can be explained in optional essay )
Grad- Same State School in Midwest, MS Industrial and Systems Engineering, GPA 4.0

Work Experience :- 2 years (currently) as a Test Engineer for a DOD contractor, military aircraft (Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin)
Working full-time during MS degree (50hours/week)
Currently writing a thesis
EC: Sports, Volunteering at local Food Shelter, Programs on campus (lots in leadership)
Schools of Interest:- HBS, CBS, Sloan, Kellogg, Wharton, Tuck, Yale, Fuqua, Johnson, Owen (would like opinions on what schools I would be competitive for)
Goals: Consulting, General Management, Operations Management -- I am not an MBB or bust. I would still work for Deloitte, Amazon, etc.

Things look good from here, dude.
I mean as a Native American applicant with a 720 you are already off to a great start. And working for a DOD contractor! Can't get better than that. With your volunteer and your Masters degree, you should be set.

The only potential blemish might have been your GPA, buuuuut one little black mark is forgivable, plus you did make up for it on your GMAT and in your Masters.

I think, with a good story you can aim for Top 10 (although you should stick in one or two in the Top 20 as "Safe" schools). Your school list is fine (although I am curious about why you selected Owen), although you could recombine it with any schools from the top schools, as for consulting it would be fine from anywhere. So I'd just say apply to all the top schools that appeal to you, and see how the cards fall.

Best,
Jon

Hey,

I'm not going to repeat what the other folks have said - you have a wonderful profile! The only thing I'd add is to definitely look into the Consortium. You can apply to a lot of programs effectively and efficiently and you also open yourself up for fellowship money, which is always a plus! Our clients who have gone that route have loved it. You can check the program out here: https://www.cgsm.org/

Good luck!

Schools similar to mine are: Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, so fairly known but not known for academics.

I was wondering what GMAT score I should shoot for, since I have plenty of time to retake it before I apply? I was thinking 740, to be above average?

Also, even though I am Native American, I do not have a roll number. How would this affect my application? Do I still select Native American? Or Other/Caucasian? I am not 100% but still have a larger portion than most with Caucasian being the other percentage.

My final question. Since I have an MS, I need to tell why it does not allow me to advance my career the way an MBA would. What would be some general answers? My response is that I like Industrial Engineering and that I thought it would open certain opportunities but didn't. I can say this more eloquently, but how would you broach the subject?

Thanks.

The higher the GMAT, the better. If you can rock a 740 - some doors will open my friend! As for Native American, if you identify as such, then that's what counts. I mean, you want to be a meaningful % but if you feel it's the truth, then go for it.

As for why you need an MBA and how you communicate that - that's far more than can be talked about on a forum. If you want to chat about that, happy to do so but we'd need to get on a call. So if you want, sign up for a free consultation where we can chat about that and more!
