A few thoughts on your profile
  1. The work profile looks quite intriguing and the transitions you've already made can make for a pretty good story arc. Especially the most recent role will have to be put into perspective despite the leg in the environment space. While I hear you on the consulting part, the rationale for that and the story behind that will have to be fleshed out well too.
  2. The ECs look powerful but dated (?). Recency effect is pretty important overall so may be limited mileage there.
  3. Not able to get a relative sense of the undergrad GPA - fair to say it was below to about average? The grad GPA and GMAT will help your case to quite an extent though.
  4. MBA after 30 can be pretty tricky. You are likely to be quite a big outlier for many in your current target set. It would be prudent to focus on the one-year MBA programs and also evaluate the Fellows programs. The latter are likely to be a much better fit overall.
  5. MBB would indeed be pretty tough given the factors that you are already aware of - mainly the age/experience range though. Best to have a solid fallback plan in place.

Hope this helps some.

Cheers,

Thank you so much for your time and comments on my profile. Yes the undergrad GPA was below average from a top school (so still below average), but the GPA and GMAT are hopefully strong enough. I will focus on the 1 year MBA programs, I think that is my best bet. Thankfully I'm not MBB or bust - I also have a fallback plan (promotion in my current company) and am open to other options as well.

Hi Tarun,

If you are considering the executive MBAs (I didn't quite get what you mean by W/E, but this is what I assume), then your task would be a lot more easier, as they would be more accepting of your profile (high age/ work experience). AT programs like Kellogg, you could try for their one year MBA- they do have some pre-enrollment criteria though- you should have completed courses in stats, marketing, econ and operations prior to enrollment.

I do agree with you that a move to strategy consulting will be difficult. MBBs mostly take MBAs at the associate level so that's where you would end up starting if they were to recruit you at all. While consulting may seem more like a swanky career at this time, I would encourage you to explore career options that are more allied with the current skill set you have built.

Lastly, if you'd like to apply to INSEAD, you should go ahead and apply. Also, apply to IMD if you don't mind being in Europe. IMD picks students who have already moved into leadership roles and you seem to fit that bill.

Namita, thanks for stopping by.

By W/E MBA I meant weekend/evening MBA (part time programs), which I believe are more accepting of older applicants. I hear you on the strategy consulting, and I appreciate your good advice. I am keeping a lot of options open definitely. I will add IMD to my list, in general I have seen that European B-schools are more accepting of older applicants.

With that fallback plan, definitely aim for the Fellows programs - great brands and the right fit.

Btw, do be sure on an EMBA's usefulness generally speaking.

Weekend MBAs are also easier to get acceptance into. SO you may still be attending the best MBA program. IMD's application deadlines are underway, so start your research quickly. As Manish has suggested, I will also recommend you look into the Fellows programs at Stanford, MIT Sloan and LBS. iBear is another option there - these programs however are fulltime, one year. That's their vast difference from the weekend MBAs. So you need to also know what format of the program would yo want to study .

Why MBA

I want to change careers to management consulting. I realize I have quite a lot going against me in this case especially if I want to get into MBB (i.e., age is above median, low undergrad GPA), so please feel free to comment on this as well.

Target schools (I am also looking at W/E MBAs because of the opportunity cost). I live in Toronto.

Rotman (Canada), Ivey (Canada), Kellogg (I know it’s a stretch), Dartmouth, Duke, Darden, Michigan
My absolute stretch school for a 1 year program would be INSEAD

Hey tnt,

You've got a number of things going for you here - solid work experience/progression, high GMAT score, and a dedicated history of giving back to the community and leadership. Yes, the GPA is low, but if there wasn't grade inflation this number may not be so bad. Would you happen to know what percentile you were in? These things make a difference. If the 2.5 is an actual 2.5, are there mitigating circumstances for why it is low?

I think sales leader --> management consultant is a reasonable progrsssion, just make sure you are specific about the industry you would like to get into and the types of problems you expect to solve. I'd skew towards tech, since that is your most immediate and relevant experience. You could also vouch for product management at a tech firm given your experience leading teams and working with c-level executives. Remember, most people change their minds once they start recruiting, so the important thing is understanding what type of story makes the most sense for you to show admissions you can formulate a coherent plan.

While your age is a bit on the high side, this is more common with international applicants, so I wouldn't worry too much. In terms of your school selections, I think you have a reasonable chance at the Canadian schools along with a handful of US programs in the 8-15 ranking range. Kellogg is a nice reach, and I think you would be well-served to apply to Darden, Fuqua, and Ross as your targets as I think you will be competitive. At this point, its going to be 100% application execution and making sure your story is down pat!

Let me know if you have any more questions and feel free to reach out at [email protected] to discuss your profile in more depth and to see if we could potentially work together.
