Of the people who brought about the Reformation, the religious revolution that grew out of objections to the doctrines of the medieval church, Martin Luther is the best known of them.

A. Martin Luther is the best known of them
B. the best known is Martin Luther
C. the better known of them was Martin Luther
D. Martin Luther is better known
E. the best known one was Martin Luther

The answer is B

We taking Martin Luther out of the people who brought about the reformation .
We need best here because there are may people out which Martin Luther was best known .
Better is used for comparison when there two things to compare .
Make sense now. Thanks for explanation

Can somebody explain please ?

Use POE to eliminate C,D, and E.
B is better than A. "of them" is redundant

it is reverse order sentence in which adverbial phrase goes first. So, we should put verb before subject

B is good and precise

A. Martin Luther is the best known of them redundant 'of them;
B. the best known is Martin Luther
C. the better known of them was Martin Luther redundant 'of them', should use superlative 'best'
D. Martin Luther is better known should use superlative 'best'
E. the best known one was Martin Luther redundant 'one', past tense 'was' is incorrect'

does gmat ever test the structure "the second after the best"?

chesstitans I can't imagine a sentence in which we'd say "the second after the best." The normal usage would simply be "the second best," as in "My cousin is the second best goalkeeper in the league," or "Not wanting to settle for second best, he pressured the hotel staff to upgrade his room to a suite."

I am thankful that you give me both the answer and the knowledge. Nevertheless, I still do not know how to say "after the person whom I love most, who is the person whom I love most ?"

Hi,

I believe in learning from other's experiences but unfortunately i have not been able to find a post around my query on this question.

Solving this question in a timed manner, I presumed "Of the people who brought about the Reformation" as a modifier, hence, eliminated all choices but A & D.
A turned out to be a better choice, but as we all know it isn't the OA.

My question - is this phrase, Of the people who brought about the Reformation, not working as a Modifier for Martin Luther ?

Thanks in advance :D

Bunuel I'll be really grateful, if you can look into it.
