A) Excepting programs like Betamax, -- Examples can't be used with "like"

B) Programs like Betamax being excepted, -- same as A

C) Except for a program such as Betamax, -- with example given with "Such as", it is expected that the example is part of a collective plural. Hence, singular "program" doesn't make sense

D) With the exception of programs such as Betamax -- CORRECT, the issue in C is fixed here

E) As an exception to programs such as Betamax -- "As" here adds a causality to contrasting clauses.

So, the answer should be D

1. "Such as" is used instead of "like" when there are examples in a statement.
2. " Excepting programs like Betamax" - modifying the "inferior technologies and the stocks associated with them" - changes the meaning.

- Incorrect

B) Programs like Betamax being excepted,

1. "Such as" is used instead of "like" when there are examples in a statement. "Like" is used for comparison only.
2. Usage of "being" is inappropriate.

- Incorrect

C) Except for a program such as Betamax,

- "Except for a program..." changed the meaning.
- Incorrect

D) With the exception of programs such as Betamax

- Correct

E) As an exception to programs such as Betamax

- "As an exception..." made comparison with "inferior technologies and the stocks associated with them" which is incorrect

Answer: D

A) Excepting programs like Betamax,
"Excepting" is just too awkward.

B) Programs like Betamax being excepted,
"Being excepted" is awkward as well.

C) Except for a program such as Betamax,
"Except for" is much better here, but "a program" implies ONE program, so it doesn't make sense to follow with an example "sch as Betamax".

Something like "Except for the program Betamax" would make much more sense.


D) With the exception of programs such as Betamax
"With the exception of" is idiomatic. Good.

E) As an exception to programs such as Betamax
"An as exception...". Just wrong.

Which after comma refers to the subject which is betamax, Which will be placed as close to "which", B is not following the structure, hence we can eliminate B

Like is used with nouns or noun phrases, since except is a verb, like can't be used. Such as is correct. Eliminate A

The author intended to generalize programs like betamax not just betamax as a single program, "a program" is wrong. "Eliminate C"

Exception of program is not parallel with result of marketing strategies. Both have nothing in common to put parallelism in between. Eliminate E.

D is better option among all.

I think, the non underlined part “as a result of exceptional marketing strategies” uses plural form (strategies), so plural (programs) should be correct.
