Essayist: Every contract negotiator has been lied to by someone or other, and whoever lies to anyone is practicing deception. But, of course, anyone who has been lied to has also lied to someone or other.

Essayist: Every contract negotiator has been lied to by someone or other, and whoever lies to anyone is practicing deception. But, of course, anyone who has been lied to has also lied to someone or other.

If the essayist’s statements are true, which one of the following must also be true?

(A) Every contract negotiator has practiced deception.

(B) Not everyone who practices deception is lying to someone.

(C) Not everyone who lies to someone is practicing deception.

(D) Whoever lies to a contract negotiator has been lied to by a contract negotiator.

(E) Whoever lies to anyone is lied to by someone.

Every CN has been lied to.
Anyone who has been lied to has also lied to someone or other. (which means every CN has lied to someone)
Whoever lies to anyone is practicing deception. (which means every CN is practicing deception)

Which must be true?

(A) Every contract negotiator has practiced deception.

Correct.

(B) Not everyone who practices deception is lying to someone.

We don't know about whether all who practice deception lie to someone or only some do.

(C) Not everyone who lies to someone is practicing deception.

False. We know that everyone who lies to someone is practicing deception.

(D) Whoever lies to a contract negotiator has been lied to by a contract negotiator.

We don't know.

(E) Whoever lies to anyone is lied to by someone.

We know that everyone who is lied to, lies to someone. We don't know whether everyone who lies has been lied to.

Answer (A)

(A) Every contract negotiator has practiced deception.
Since every contract negotiator is lied by someone (and lying is deception) and lies to someone else, so every cont. negotiator has practiced deception. CORRECT

(B) Not everyone who practices deception is lying to someone.
if someone is practicing deception means is lying

(C) Not everyone who lies to someone is practicing deception.
the opposite of what is said in the argument

(D) Whoever lies to a contract negotiator has been lied to by a contract negotiator.
repetition of the premises not a conclusion

(E) Whoever lies to anyone is lied to by someone.
restates the premises in the argument not any conludion drawn

(A) Every contract negotiator has practiced deception.

(B) Not everyone who practices deception is lying to someone. -- Incorrect. The passage directly contradicts this.

(C) Not everyone who lies to someone is practicing deception. -- same as B.

(D) Whoever lies to a contract negotiator has been lied to by a contract negotiator. -- Incorrect. Not necessarily lied to by a CN, but possibly by someone else. Not borne out by the passage. Incorrect.

(E) Whoever lies to anyone is lied to by someone. This is classic if A ----> B, then B ----> A is not necessarily true. Passaged says whoever has been lied to lies to someone else. But not necessarily the other way round.
