Jeff’s average (arithmetic mean) monthly utility bill for the months of June, July, and August was $75. During which month did he receive the highest bill?

(1) The lowest bill was received in July.
(2) The total of his bills for July and August was $160.

Kudos for a correct solution.

(1) The lowest bill was received in July.
Not sufficient --- no idea about other two month .

(2) The total of his bills for July and August was $160.

total bill of 3 month = $225
july and August was $160. therefore june is $55

Still not possible to find which month has max. value .

together st 1 n 2

july has the lowest .
June value = 55

Therefore min value of july can be 54 . Then august has maximum value .

Note july value will be less than or equal = 54 and what ever be the value july within this range ....August has maximum value .

hence C ans .

Kudos for a correct solution.

June + July + August = 75*3 = $225

Question : Highest (June, July, Aug) = ?

Statement 1: The lowest bill was received in July.
Lowest was in July i.e. Highest could be either in June or in August but still that remains unknown. Hence,
NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: The total of his bills for July and August was $160.
July + August = 160
i.e. June = 225-160 = 65
But Remaining 160 may have any distribution between the remaining two months hence Month with Highest amount is still unknown. Hence,
NOT SUFFICIENT

Combining the two statements
June = 65
July + August = 160
and July is lowest which must be less than june
i.e. July < 65
i.e. August > 160-65
i.e. August > 95
Hence, Highest has to be August
SUFFICIENT

Answer: option C

Kudos for a correct solution.

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

Question Type: What Is the Value? What is the month when Jeff received the highest bill: June, July, or August?

Given information from the question stem: The average for the 3 months was $75. It is a good idea to just multiply this right away to get the total amount for the 3 months = $225 total.

Statement 1: The lowest bill was received in July. This means that the July bill must be lower than $75. However, the highest bill could still be for June or August. Since this is not specific it is not sufficient. Eliminate choices A and D.

Statement 2: The total for July and August was $160. This gives you the exact amount for June. $225 – 160 = $65 for June. Be careful not to include the information from Statement 1 at this point. You do not know whether July or August is the highest bill. This statement alone is not sufficient. Eliminate choice B.

Together: Taken together you know that the June bill is $65 and that the July bill is for less than this amount. Since the total amount of all three has to be $225, and June and July account for less than $130, the August bill must account for at least $95, and therefore be the highest total. This is sufficient.

The answer is C.
