Hi all! I hope you and your families are safe in these chaotic times.
I have applied to four European schools (RSM, ESADE, IESE, IE) and am very thankful to have a few offers as an international with a low GMAT score.
I would really appreciate any advice on the options that I currently have.
Here are some facts about me.
- Asian female from the media industry
- 6+ years of work experience in marketing and sales
- Top reasons for pursuing an MBA:
1) To relocate to international cities that don't require local languages other than English. e.g London, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Berlin, Singapore....etc
2) Advance my quant skills such as Business Analytics. Coming from sales/marketing background I feel like I don't really have any hard skillsets that make me
stand out from the crowd... if you know what I mean!
- Post-MBA goals:
1) Stay in the entertainment industry (OTT, game, film...etc) and change my function to Business Development or Product Development.
2) Move to tech or other innovative companies with BD or PD functions.
I am trying to understand the following areas for the program:
1. Career progression / improve my chances of relocation as an international student (although things have changed quite dramatically over the past few months..

)
2. Prestige and brand value
Here below are my personal analysis of each school. The order is based on the sequence of acceptance.
Rotterdam School of Management MBA ($)
Period: 2021 January to 2021 December
Pros:
+ Job placement rate in the Netherlands is pretty high for all internationals by and large (but the recession... urgh!)
+ I've been offered a part scholarship
Cons:
- RSM doesn’t have much recognition outside the NL or Europe. Rankings are the lowest among all the schools that I've been accepted.
- Elective modules are less attractive compared to the ones in the other schools.
- I'm not too sure if 12 months will be enough time for me to digest all the new skillsets and get a job in a new country
- The way that the Dutch government is reacting to the COVID-19... I'm no expert, but I have a feeling that it will last longer than in other countries with stricter measures.
ESADE ($$)
Period: 2020 September to 2022 February / 18 months
Pro:
+ I like the community spirit of the school. I met a really supportive alumni in my city. Truly cooperative and supportive student body.
+ 18 months option available which feels like an optimal length during the recession.
+ 30% of the students go into tech.
+ Barcelona seems rather safe at this moment compared to other European cities.
Cons:
- Weak in rankings. Always lower than IESE and IE.
IESE ($$$)
Period: 2020 September to 2022 March / 19 months
+ Pretty high in rankings. Roughly between 11th to 13th.
+ Recently putting a lot of emphasis on Entrepreneurship (I'm not so interested in consulting, which is their main focus)
+ 19 months option available which feels like an optimal duration during the recession.
+ Barcelona. (I don't particularly love the city but in terms of a safety issue at this moment)
Cons:
- Less known than IE in the global market.
- Relocation rate for the people who don't have the passport to work in a certain country is only around 38%
IE ($$$$)
Period: 2 Choices available at this moment.
- MBA: 2020 September to 2021 August / 12 months
- Dual Degree: 2020 September to 2022 March / 19 months (8 months of MBA + 10 months of masters)
Pros
+ High in rankings. A lot of people say it's the consistent third in Europe after INSEAD and LBS.
+ 2 options available: Dual Degree programme (MBA+Business Analytics and Big Data) and a regular MBA.
+ I think I'll have a better career trajectory with the Dual Degree.
+ Strong focus on entrepreneurship from core modules.
Cons:
- It's not at all safe in Madrid at this moment.
- If I start my Dual Degree in fall, I would miss out on most of the real experience of MBA as the programme consists of 8 months of MBA and 10 months of Business Analytics.
Thus, I'm thinking whether I should defer this to at least one term so that I can start in Jan 2021.
- If I choose to do a regular MBA, I'm not so sure if the job market will be active by the time I graduate in 2021 August.
In a nutshell, I'm attracted to NL as a country to live in, but the quality of education seems to be higher in all three Spanish schools.
I'm torn between choices and starting to doubt everything from the beginning. (Is it even possible to do a degree overseas at this time? and so forth..)
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!
