A wildlife preserve is being planned for 3,000 rhinoceroses. The preserve is to contain a total of 10,000 acres of watering area, plus 100 acres of grazing area for each rhinoceros. If the number of rhinoceroses is expected to increase by 10 percent, how many thousand acres should the preserve have in order to provide for the increased population?

(A) 340
(B) 330
(C) 320
(D) 310
(E) 300

Total area = Grazing area + Watering area

Grazing area = 3000*100 = 300,000
Rhino population increases by 10% i.e. by 300
Increase in area = 300,000 + 300*100 = 330,000

Watering area = 10,000

Total area = 340,000

Since we need to know the area in 1000 acres answer = 340,000/1000

Total Area = 340 thousand acres.

Answer: Option A

Total Rhinoceroses = 3,000

Watering Area = 10,000 Acres
Area For Rhinoceroses = 100 acres for each = 100 * 3,000 = 300,000 Acres

Total Area = 10,000 + 300,000 = 310,000 Acres

Expected Increase = 10% = 10/100*3000 = 300 Rhinoceroses

Hence, additional area required = 300*100 = 30,000 Acres

New Area Requirement = 310,000 Acres + 30,000 Acres

New Area Requirement = 340,000 Acres or 340K

Hence, the answer is (A) 340

With the 10% increase in the population of rhinoceroses, the preserve would have 3,000 x 1.1 = 3,300 rhinoceroses. Therefore, the area of the preserve needs to be :

10,000 + 100 x 3300 = 340,000 acres or 340 thousand acres

Answer: A

Bunuel,

Why are we keeping 10000 acres of watering area fixed even when the percentage of animals is increasing. Shouldn't that be proportionally changed as well? I don't see any constraint(seems like I am missing) which says 10,000 is fixed and not subject to change. Thank you.

Because the question states 10,000 acres as one fixed total, while only the grazing area is given per rhinoceros.
