A wildlife preserve is being planned for 3,000 rhinoceroses. The preserve is to contain a total of 10,000 acres of watering area, plus 100 acres of grazing area for each rhinoceros. If the number of rhinoceroses is expected to increase by 10 percent, how many thousand acres should the preserve have in order to provide for the increased population?

total fixed area for watering =10(in thousand acres)
total area for grazing =300(in thousand acres)
additional area required for grazing as the no of rhinos increased for 3000 to 3300=30(in thousand acres)
sum total area =10+300+30=340(in thousand acres)

Number of rhino to increase by 10 percent ,then number of rhino = 3300
Grazing area for a rhino = 100
Total grazing area for 3300 rhinos= 3300 * 100 = 3,30,000

Total area required for the wildlife preserve = 3,30,000 + 10,000 = 3,40,000 = 340 * 1000

Increase in area = 300,000 + 300*100 = 330,000

Total Area = 340 thousand acres.

Watering Area = 10,000 Acres
Area For Rhinoceroses = 100 acres for each = 100 * 3,000 = 300,000 Acres

Total Area = 10,000 + 300,000 = 310,000 Acres

Expected Increase = 10% = 10/100*3000 = 300 Rhinoceroses

Hence, additional area required = 300*100 = 30,000 Acres

New Area Requirement = 310,000 Acres + 30,000 Acres

New Area Requirement = 340,000 Acres or 340K

Hence, the answer is (A) 340

does the question mean that the watering area will remain constant ?

how many thousand acres should the preserve have in order to provide  for the increased population ?

Is the problem is asking area required by the increased population which means 10% of the earlier population?

With the 10% increase in the population of rhinoceroses, the preserve would have 3,000 x 1.1 = 3,300 rhinoceroses. Therefore, the area of the preserve needs to be :

10,000 + 100 x 3300 = 340,000 acres or 340 thousand acres
