Does Harvard care much if we use the same essay for both schools? I'm planning to use my Stanford essay to submit to HBS, and just remove the Stanford-specific wording. So instead of saying "I want to get an MBA from Stanford to launch a career in..." I would say the same exact thing but use "HBS"
I imagine that the admissions committee can easily tell that an essay is Stanfords since it will talk about what matters to me and why I want to get an MBA. Do they look negatively at that and want a unique essay or are they ok knowing that they receive an edited version of Stanford?
I'm guessing that, all else equal, it would better to have a unique essay, but I'd rather not have to write a whole new one unless it's necessary
Thank you!

I would only try this if you’re fine getting dinged for the essay at the outset. Do you care much if you get rejected? Harvard has enough candidates applying that they don’t need to invite any one person to the interview, let alone admit them. Keep the core essay themes if you like them, but I would encourage you to rewrite the details and conclusion for HBS. They have different questions because they want to see different things from the applicant.
On another note, if the ‘why Stanford’ answer is broad enough it can apply to another school, then you should probably dig deeper on that answer too.
Agree with the person above. The questions are fundamentally different - Stanford is asking what matters most to you and why, Harvard is open ended but needs to cover leadership, analytical ability, and community engagement. Answer the question to actually have a chance!
FYI I wrote my Harvard essay, then chose to write about some of the same experiences in my Stanford one, but much more focused on one issue (to actually answer the question!)
