Fall 2012 Essays have been posted:

Essays
• First-time applicants and reapplicants are required to complete the same set of essay questions.

REQUIRED QUESTION:
What are your professional objectives?

RESPOND TO 2 OF THE FOLLOWING 3 QUESTIONS:
1. Reflect on a time when you turned down an opportunity. What was the thought process behind your decision? Would you make the same decision today?

2. Discuss a time when you faced a challenging interpersonal experience. How did you navigate the situation and what did you learn from it?

3. "Innovation is central to our culture at Wharton. It is a mentality that must encompass every aspect of the School - whether faculty research, teaching or alumni outreach." - Thomas S. Robertson, Dean, The Wharton School

Keeping this component of our culture in mind, discuss a time when you have been innovative in your personal or professional life.

It doesn't look like the application has gone live, however.

Am I missing something here? No word limits this year?

@xerox: Sure. That is some empowering.

Disclaimer: Analysis is primarily suggestive ;)

REQUIRED QUESTION:
What are your professional objectives?
A.
State Short Term Goal/s. How will Wharton enable you to achieve this/these? How are you going to be able to utilize the tools/resources provided by Wharton for achieving this/these goals?
State Mid-term Goal/s(Most B-Schools won't explicitly talk about this): Link your short term and long term goals. In most cases, it will follow a logical transition from Short Term->Mid-Term->Long Term. How can Wharton make this transition smooth?
State Long Term Goal/s: How will Wharton enable you to achieve this?
Forming a logical connection from what do you wish to carry to what is offered by Wharton becomes inevitable here. Once that has been done, how will Wharton assist you in this bridging is the question you need to answer.

RESPOND TO 2 OF THE FOLLOWING 3 QUESTIONS:
1. Reflect on a time when you turned down an opportunity. What was the thought process behind your decision? Would you make the same decision today?
A.
This question arises a few possibilities
a) Resiliency check. Would you take the same decision today means, would you stand by your decision that you made? If, presented to you the same situation under the present circumstances (IMO: Decisions are made based on circumstantial evidence typically)?
b) Do you think you made a wrong decision? Which means, at this point in time wherever you are is the result of that decision you made. Do you believe that if you had decided otherwise things would have been different and in-line with your goals?
Go back and look for an important decision you made. Even if you think you made a wrong decision back then, realizing that you made a wrong decision is great. How you have had/ you are having a work-around to handle the possible cons arising out of that wrong decision? How effective are these work-around strategies helping you resonate with your goals?

PS: I haven't had this experience yet or am unable to find a significant time where I had to accomplish this. If I were to answer this question, I would pick up "b" because it also answers the question "How I handled failure?" in someway, this question being an essay topic last year.

2. Discuss a time when you faced a challenging interpersonal experience. How did you navigate the situation and what did you learn from it?
A.
"Challenging". This word is subjective. You know this, I know this and we all know this. So, don't try to speak whatever they want to hear. Your degree of challenge might be different as compared to others. Just state YOUR challenge and how YOU handled the challenge. If you have had any ethical differences that had to be navigated through, include them here.
Answer these questions, what is the most significant challenge you have ever faced without being bothered about the degree of the challenge? Once you identified, express how this challenge was handled? For example, faced with the situation X, one is compelled to go by the decision Y, which may not be ethically sound. Instead of choosing "Y", you choose Z, which is less/not ethically wrong. I have been stressing upon the ethical issue part because I plan to state the challenge I faced.
Provide sound logical reasoning behind how you went about facing this challenge.

A.
What is "Innovation"? It's not exactly invent/discover. It's bringing about a change. How have you been significant in bringing about a change? Have you invented something that could potentially change something for the better? Any significant discovery that could perhaps change for the good? If you have not done the above, then have you provided platform where significant innovations could take place? What is the platform and how did you provide this platform? Why do you think, this platform will be effective for enabling innovation?

PS: Please provide feedback/suggestions, I shall be honored to receive them.

Best of luck!

Cheers,
prabshan

F1! F1! Help!
1) I faced a situation at work that was challenging to me. What did I do about it? I started a group (almost 70% complete) for those who may need support to face similar situations as I faced. This platform(group) is actually much talked about as a platform for innovation across India.
2) I have faced several challenges growing up. Funding my schooling, my undergrad; personal issues at home etc.
3) Launched a new initiative for easing new hires getting into my workplace. The process is on-going and duration of the initiative is 5 weeks.

Am unable to decide if I can weave 1 & 2 into the interpersonal challenge essay and use the 3rd for innovation or use 1 for innovation and 2 alone for interpersonal challenge essay. Am again skeptical about using 3 because:
a) The initiative was rolled out last week
b) There have been talks/discussions/strategies but at very minimum levels during Jan 2011.
c) The initiative actually came into the discussion stage during 3rd week of May
As new hires come only during the months of July-August typically, the discussion stage happening in May can be justified
This initiative DID require a team of 3 to be working. I can't say I was leading the team as such but was an active member. I have provided SIGNIFICANT inputs into this.
Again, I have my slight doubts regarding the significance of 3 for the Innovation essay.

"You're the best judge to decide what you want", yes am aware of this.

What am expecting is a general feedback on my thoughts. Though there may not be a precise answer to my query, I shall be glad to know different perspectives.

PS: Am sorry if I happened to post this in the wrong thread and had to post this in the profile eval thread

I think you might be misunderstanding the challenge essay question. It's not talking about a personal challenge, but an interpersonal one. An interpersonal challenge involves another person (or people) and how you relate to them. Did you and another coworker have opposing viewpoints on how to accomplish a goal. Did you manage through a difficult interaction with a teammate on a sports team? That's what the question is asking about.

As for example #3, I think it's a great way to show innovation and initiative. Apps aren't due until October so you can wait until the end of the summer to see what the results of the new program will be. You may not have led the team, but you had an idea that you got others on board with and passed it on to someone else to lead. Sounds innovative to me.

Thanks for the input. Again with ref. to 3, there are no leads as such. It's completely voluntary and we three of us have taken up responsibility.

Could anyone please provide me with a road map of a Management Consultant's career, if there is one?

Best regards,
prabshan

And it would be great if some one could diversify my view point on this.:

I had a couple of bad grades in college as in "E- Exposed" which I turned around to "good/above average" respectively in the next year. Other than that I had continuous advancements in the following semesters. My GPA turned out just fine from a top tier school.

Dont mean to make it sound like an excuse but I had far more pressing societal issues during that semester, which felt of greater importance than academics at that point and about which I had done something taking up leadership initiatives.

Am applying only to wharton this year. They have an optional essay to explain the "extenuating circumstances" . It was just those two grades and nothing else at all in the whole transcipt. I could explain I was involved in leadership activities in the society , so lost track of academics but am not that person anymore, etc., etc.

Other than this flaw I have a solid application. So Should I rely on the rest and just let it be?? or should I explain it??

If you recognize it right now as a potential weakness in your application then the admissions committee will notice it too. Adcoms like to see self awareness and part of that is recognizing our weaknesses and addressing them. The optional essay is your space to direct how they view your potential weaknesses. If you don't use it you basically leave it up to them to interpret it any way they wish. From the advice that I've seen, address it (don't dwell on it) and then show how you've grown since then. Simple as that.
