Could someone please explain me , how " they " refers back to women? in option choice D
women is in possessive form and " they " is not a possessive pronoun. only a possessive pronoun can refer back to either of the two: possessive noun or noun.

Although women's is possessive but here they is referring to women .It is not always essential to use possessive.here context is talking about women so "they" is used .
If something about women possession is required then possessive will come.

Can someone confirm me?
In my opinion, the correct answer of this question has grammatical problem.

Unlike women's response to stress, in which they experience great anxiety and sadness, men's response to stress is driven by reward motivation, manifested through increased craving for alcohol.

According to RonPurewal the rule ( https://www.manhattanprep.com/gmat/forums/post46683.html#p46683) is : POSSESSIVE NOUN with NON-POSSESSIVE PRONOUN is NOT OK.
If it's true, how can they refer to women's?
