While out having drinks after work, Jerry and his coworkers discussed to quit their jobs and to open their own business.

a) discussed to quit their jobs and to open

b) jokingly talked about quitting their jobs and opening

c) are having a discussion about quitting their jobs and to open

d) talked seriously to quit their jobs and opening

e) telled about the idea to quit their jobs and open

This question is from GMAT club Ultimate GMAT Grammar book. It's free! Thanks bb. :-D

Although got it right because of the parallelism quitting and opening but isn't the word 'jokingly' distorts the actual meaning ?

This is a tricky one between A and B. Others are clearly wrong. I chose A as soon as I read the question....but then saw the answer was B....

The only reason A could be wrong is that "discussed to" is an incorrect idiom and it should be "discussed about". I did some research on this and could not find any example with discussed to but I am not sure. I will let you know once I have a confirmed information about this.

Or let's wait if someone else replies with the correct reason as to Why not A. Thanks.

For me, 'to' is used for the intention , there was no intention 'to quit' and 'to open' , they just discussed.
In other words, they did not discuss with an intention that they will quit and open.

A, C, D and E option can be discarded on that - B prevails.

Isn't the official answer distorting the original meaning of the sentence?

Where on the questions stem does the author imply "jokingly" ?
