Answer is -E-

Since I’m typing from a phone, I apologize for the brevity of the post. I’ll point out the issues and concepts that I flagged.

“effort of” vs “effort in” vs “effort to”

-A- “part of a long term effort OF subjecting carbon dioxide,....”

When I say “effort OF” I’m usually implying that the effort belonged to someone or something.

“The effort of the defensive line was extraordinary.”

In this sentence, the author is trying to say that this analyzer is part of a long-term PLAN/EFFORT. The effort isn’t attributable to anyone or anything.

The correct idiom for this sentence should be “effort TO”; in other words the noun form of “effort” followed by an Infinitive Verb Form “to subject”. These analyzers are being put into place for a purpose. The infinitive “to subject” conveys that purpose.

Also in -A-, singular “is” is used in the noun-modifier following “that”. This is wrong. The verb should be the Plural Form “are” for the referent noun “many analyzers”.

-B-
The major issue in B is the use of a non-essential “comma, which” type noun modifier. The descriptive information that follows the “which” in -B- is essential to the sentence. Removing it would change the focus of the sentence.

Also, again the Singular “is” is incorrectly used.

-C-

Idiom = “Subject TO”

In the case of this sentence, the goal for these analyzers is to subject these emissions to regulations. The use of a present progressive “are emitting” in place of the proper Idiom “subject X to Y” is wrong.

For example:

“I subject my girlfriend to my attitude daily.”

-D-

“Effort in” should be changed to “effort to”, as described above.

Also, removing the “to” and substituting “that has” after “long term” removes the Purpose that the sentence needs to convey.

These analyzer are part of a plan that has a purpose to subject the emissions to investigation.

The phrase “that has” to describe the long term effort removes the purpose that the preposition “to” provides.

Also, “effort in the long-term” could be stated more succinctly as “long-term effort.”

EDIT: I intended to write “I see no issues with Answer Choice -E”

-E- is correct

With its initial deployment scheduled in the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys, the Picarro is the first of many analyzers that is part of a long-term effort of subjecting carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gas emissions to statewide scrutiny and investigation.

that is referring to analysers so it must be followed by are

A) many analyzers that is part of a long-term effort of subjecting carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gas emissions

B) many analyzers, which is a part of a long-term effort to subject how carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases emit

C) many analyzers, part of a long-term effort of subjecting how carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases are emitting : meaning change. There is difference between subjecting carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gas emissions and subjecting how carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases are emitting.

D) many analyzers that are part of an effort in the long term that has subjected the carbon dioxide, methane, and other green¬house gas emissions

E) many analyzers that are part of a long-term effort to subject carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gas emissions

A) many analyzers that is part of a long-term effort of subjecting carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gas emissions

That refers to the nearest noun - analyzers which is plural - Incorrect

B) many analyzers, which is a part of a long-term effort to subject how carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases emit - which refers to analyzers (plural) and needs a plural verb.

C) many analyzers, part of a long-term effort of subjecting how carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases are emitting -are emitting to state wide scrutiny n investigation?????? foolish right - There is a complete change in the meaning

D) many analyzers that are part of an effort in the long term that has subjected the carbon dioxide, methane, and other green¬house gas emissions

the second that - refers to long term - long term has subjected the c02 , methane ...etc emissions??? - No right - eliminate

E) many analyzers that are part of a long-term effort to subject carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gas emissions[/quote]

we are left with this one. Usage of that and meaning is conveyed properly.

1. That is - referring to analyzers - plural

B) many analyzers, which is a part of a long-term effort to subject how carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases emit

referring to analyzers - plural

C) many analyzers, part of a long-term effort of subjecting how carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases are emitting
Effort of is wrong here- it should be effort to not of as the meaning mean... effort is of subjecting ( already subjected)
D) many analyzers that are part of an effort in the long term that has subjected the carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gas emissions
that has subjected - the effort has subjected - doesn't make prop sense
E) many analyzers that are part of a long-term effort to subject carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gas emissions
