For many authors, beyond the act of self-exploration lies a sense of writing as a sacrament, a personal ritual that provides a sense of solace to them, as religion does for other people.

Per the meaning of the sentence, we require lies rather lays - Eliminate B & E
The un-underlined part of the sentence "a personal ritual that provides a sense of solace" is required to be close to "sacrament" - Eliminate C & D

(A) beyond the act of self-exploration lies a sense of writing as a sacrament - Correct
(B) beyond the act of self-exploration lays a sense of writing as a sacrament
(C) a sense of writing as a sacrament lies beyond the act of self-exploration - modifier placement issue
(D) a sacramental sense of writing lies beyond self-exploration’s act - changes the meaning
(E) beyond self-exploration’s acts lays a sacramental sense of writing

To me, the question boils down to what should be considered as 'a personal ritual', which immediately follows the insert -
whether it is 'a sacrament' (A-B), an 'act of self-exploration' (C-D) or 'a sacramental sense' (E).

And to me, a sacrament is very synonymous to a ritual. Plus, the focal point of the sentence is that the writing is not only self-exploration (which is useful by itself),
but ALSO a ritual - so it's ALSO something in addition to exploration, like a sacrament. Therefore the suitable options are immediately A and B - not C, not D and not E.

And to compare these two, the only different is in the main verb:
Quote:
    (A) beyond the act of self-exploration lies a sense of writing as a sacrament
    (B) beyond the act of self-exploration lays a sense of writing as a sacrament
'To lay' is a transitive verb, while here the subject is performing the action - so, we need a non-transitive 'lies' instead of 'lays', which requires an object (e.g. lay the tablecloth).

Therefore, the right answer is A.

For many authors, beyond the act of self-exploration lies a sense of writing as a sacrament, a personal ritual that provides a sense of solace to them, as religion does for other people.

The phrase << a personal ritual that provides a sense of solace to them>> modifies << a sense of writing as a sacrament>> and should be placed as close as possible to it.
Hence C and D are out.
In B the use of <<lay>> is incorrect. Lay is often used to put or set (something) down.
In E the use of <<beyond self-exploration’s acts>> alters the intended meaning of the author.
Hence A is the correct choice.

Answer: Option A

(A) beyond the act of self-exploration lies a sense of writing as a sacrament
--> here verb lies followed by the object "a sense" which is wrong & made the meaning of the sentence illogical

(B) beyond the act of self-exploration lays a sense of writing as a sacrament

(C) a sense of writing as a sacrament lies beyond the act of self-exploration
-->"a personal ritual ... to them" is modifying self-exploration which is wrong

(D) a sacramental sense of writing lies beyond self-exploration’s act
-->"a personal ritual ... to them" should modify the sacrament sense not act

(E) beyond self-exploration’s acts lays a sacramental sense of writing
--> here acts are plural noun which verb lays is singular verb
