Took the GMAT for the first time today, and the results were better than I ever had hoped.
I have been studying for the GMAT on and off for about 2 and 1/2 months, but I didn't really crack down until the 12 days before the test. During this time I did all of the OG questions and both of the Kaplan Workbooks (Verbal and GRE/GMAT Math)......
To be honest, I was in no way expecting to score a 730 Q45(78th), V46(99th); Rather, my goal was only to score higher than a 650. Also my powerprep tests didn't predict me to do as well as I did (PP1= 700, PP2=670).
Here are my thoughts on the test:
Quant
I am not a particularly math inclined individual and the quant was not easy. I finished with only 2 seconds left in the session. However, studying the probability and combination problems, coupled with this site's wonderful examples helped me on several questions. Also, I had lots and lots of DS, more than I was ever expecting, and several at one time often 2-3 in a row. In the end though, I think the best help for me was creating flash cards for the GMAT Math Reference section in the Kaplan 2003 book and memorizing the processes of problems rather than just doing OG questions.
Verbal
I was only scoring in the 84 percentile on the verbal powerprep so I think a few big changes I made the week before the test paid off. First, ear plugs are great and make reading the passages alot clearer. I didn't get a RC till about question 9 or 10, but I thought all of the passages were more interesting than the ones in the OG. Also, I think studying the appendix in the Kaplan Verbal book was the most important tool, because it outlines several easily memorable rules very clearly.
Other thoughts:
Took the test in the afternoon, and I studied in the morning before it, reread grammar rules and idiom lists, and looked over flashcards- I think both helped ALOT.
Also, by the time 1:00 rolled around I was so tired of waiting to take the test that I wasn't nervous.
Overall, I don't think the test has gotten harder; yet, at the same time it is important to look at the probability and combination stuff, its not hard just new. And, I don't know if i got lucky or what, but if I can make a 730, believe me, its not out of reach for anybody
