Is it C?

Neither one answers it on its own, and if you take the question and statement one for a fact, then you know a, b, and x have to be positive. so then statement 2 is impossible, cause it will never be less than 0 when all are positive.

so the answer to the question is no, a is not greater than b, and you need both to come up with it?

C is correct.

(1) is not sufficient since we do not know x
(2) x<0, not sufficient again because we have squares of a and b and so lose their signs.

Combine: a<b
