Hi folks,

Can anybody give me an approximate idea as where would a percentage of 92% in Quant and 65% in verbal land me in terms of GMAT scores.

Dear Deep,
I'm happy to respond. :-)

Unfortunately, my friend, your question betrays a basic misunderstanding on how the GMAT is scored. You see, the GMAT uses Computer Adaptive Testing. The algorithm is constantly adjusting the difficulty of the questions it gives you. Your score depends not only on whether you got a question right or wrong, but also on the difficulty of that particular question.

Say person #1 gets a 25 in GMAT Quant, and person #2 gets a 52. Of course, person #1 had a mediocre so-so performance, and person #2 has a commanding performance. The profound irony is that they both might have gotten about the same number of questions correct or incorrect. Person #1 would have had a mix of easy/medium questions and would have gotten some right and some wrong. Person #2 would have gotten very difficult questions and would have some right and some wrong. It's possible that they had the exact same number correct. You see, number correct or percent correct, apart from problem difficulty, is 100% meaningless for GMAT score.

Does all this make sense?

Hi Deep,

If you're talking about the PERCENTILES (and NOT the percentage correct in each section), then those 'numbers' would be the equivalent of about a Q50/V32. These days, that score combination would likely put you in the 660-670 range. Of course, if those scores are taken 'out of context' (meaning that they are not the result of taking a FULL-LENGTH CAT under realistic conditions), then those numbers might not actually be a correct reflection of how you would score on the Official GMAT.

1) Are you currently studying for the GMAT?
2) What materials are you using?
3) What is your goal score?

Hi Deep,

IF you are talking about percentiles, then you have a decent understanding of the concepts tested on the GMAT.
Quants will correspond to 50 and V to 31/32

But these days, Q50 stands for 88%ile and 51 for 98%ile. Therefore I assume that you are talking about the percentage of questions you have got correct.
Unfortunately score calculation is not so easy on the GMAT. It is a computer adaptive test and shapes up as per your responses.
To understand your query better,

1. Which is the test that you are talking about?
2. How long have you been preparing for the GMAT?

It will explain you exactly why Mike said that two people with very different scores could actually have very similar percentage of questions correct/incorrect.

Hi,

I firstly appreciate the prompt responses particularly Mike. Secondly I apologise for missing out on the platform and that would be the test that I took was the diagnostic test by Official Guide 2016, online. It gave me scores in percentage. With the difficulty level and everything that experts might be aware of, now could you give me a fair idea of the score.

Hi Deep,

Unfortunately, the Diagnostic Test in the OG isn't comparable to what you'll face on the Official GMAT, so there's no real way to 'convert' that result into a GMAT score. You CAN take a free CAT though (you can download 2 for free from www.mba.com). To get the most realistic score result possible, you should take the FULL CAT (with the Essay and IR sections) under realistic conditions. Once you have those scores, you should post back here and we can talk through your study plan.

Hi Deep,

The best way to find out your current standing is by giving a mock test including the AWA and the IR sections. Preferably a GMAT Prep mock CAT.
You can download 2 free tests from mba.com and purchase 4 more in the form of Exam Pack 1 and 2
