Aaliyah could have bought 4 Pencils and 1 pen. Total cost: 4*18+1*27=99
Aaliyah could have bought 3 Pencils and 2 pens. Total cost: 3*18+2*27=108
Insufficient!
Statement 2:
Clearly insufficient!
Combining 1 and 2:
Aaliyah could have bought 3 Pencils and 2 pens. Total cost: 3*18+2*27=108
Aaliyah could have bought 2 Pencils and 3 pens. Total cost: 2*18+3*27=117

We are given that Aaliyah purchased 5 pencils and pens and that each pencil costs 18 cents and each pen costs 27. If we let p = the number of pencils she purchased, then the number of pens she purchased = 5 - p.
We need to determine a value for p.
Statement One Alone:
Aaliyah spent less than 126 cents.
Thus we know that 18p + 27(5 - p) < 126. Let’s simplify this inequality:
18p + 135 - 27p < 126
-9p < -9
p > 1
We know that Aaliyah bought more than 1 pencil, however, we can’t determine the exact number of pencils she bought. Statement one alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
Statement Two Alone:
Aaliyah purchased more than one pencil.
This is the same information that we gleaned from statement one. Since we can’t determine the number of pencils she bought based on statement one, statement two is also not sufficient to answer the question.
