Well I didn't say those words in either case :) ;)..... keep in mind that the entire admissions process is subjective, with some objective info making an impact on decisions and being compared with other applicant info.... and this type of situation is even more subjective and up to the readers and committee to decide what they think about it. My point is.... focus on what you CAN control.... disclosing it, being honest, focusing on what you learned from it and since then, show all you have accomplished, emphasize other profile strengths, get stellar recommendations etc. I can't say you'd have NO chance at M7 but it will be tough. There also is not a strict 'line' or cut-off from 'M7' to other top 10 or top 15 schools, keep that in mind, and within the M7 acceptance rates also vary quite a bit. But you'd have better chances at programs outside the top 10/12-ish (again no strict line in the sand cut off, just where it's SLIGHTLY less cutthroat in terms of chances of admission). For best chances you can include some 'safer' options vs the very top tier; if you don't want to regret NOT applying to the top, give one or two a shot just in case. Very personal decisions to make of course!! Good luck and keep us posted.
