OFFICIAL EXPLANATION
This sentence is weird, because it suggests that many "adults" used to be "a younger person"—it's saying that many people used to be one person, which doesn't make sense. Also, "taking place" is not the right tense to describe something that happened in the past, which is what the sentence seems to be getting at.
We can eliminate the options that have these issues: (A), (B), and (C) are out.
Left with (D) and (E), we'll choose (D) because (E) is confusing and uses the wrong verb tense.
The correct answer is Choice (D).

- Relative pronoun modifiers such as 'that' must be close to the noun it modifies
- Pay close attention to the verb tense in the question and in the answer choices. It should communicate the proper intended meaning
