Hi michaelr11,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your story. It sounds as if you have come a long way since you started your prep in 2015. Given that had you to start and stop your prep a few times, I think that with some more consistent studying you can raise your quant score.

Since you were able to score a Q34 and Q39, it’s clear that you have a solid grasp of quant fundamentals; however, to raise your quant score to an advanced level, you probably need to study each topic “with a fine-toothed comb” to determine your exact weaknesses. Given how you were previously studying by frequently taking practice exams, it’s possible that you were doing too many random questions prior to fully learning each GMAT quant topic. Thus, to fully learn each GMAT quant topic, you might consider adjusting your study routine so that it includes more focused learning and practice.

For example, if you are learning about Number Properties, you should learn everything possible about that topic: LCM, GCF, units digit patterns, divisibility, remainders, etc. After that, be sure to practice with at least 50 questions just on Number Properties. The results of that practice will give you a clear idea of your exact weaknesses in that topic. Once you are able to strengthen those weaknesses, move on to the next quant topic.

Once you feel you have fully strengthened your quant weaknesses, resume taking practice exams to track your progress. Unless you have already exhausted them, you might consider taking the exams from MBA.com.

If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out to me directly and I’d be happy to help.

Let’s get it done!!

Hi Michael,

You could potentially improve a great deal in the month of November, but you're going to have to be really efficient with your time (as it will go by quickly). This will include taking CATs in as realistic a fashion as possible (so you have to take the FULL CAT - with the Essay and IR sections, at the same time of day as your Official GMAT, take it away from your home, etc.). Since your last two scores were just for the Quant section, I suggest that you take a new FULL CAT sometime soon. Once you have that score result, you should post back here and we can discuss how best to proceed from there.

Thank you for your responses Jeff and Rich.

Jeff, I fear that you may be right in that I haven't done a really deep-dive into each area. I do think that I have a solid fundamental base, but not the broad, deep knowledge that you talk about. Unfortunately, I know that within three weeks I won't be able to achieve this.

Rich, do you think it's valuable to take another CAT now even though I just took the real thing? I thought that would be the best indicator of my current level. And I won't be able to do it until next weekend, which is a week into my three-week study time. Do you think there is enough time to gain the 'strategy-based' points you talked about? How would I do this?

Here is my plan of attack:
- Go over the theory, and practice and hone in on my 3 clear weakest areas: RTD, exponents/roots, percentages.
- Ignore all of the 700 level problems. I don't have the time for these and realistically I'm not going to see them. If I can get every 600 - 700 then I'll be around my target of Q42-44.
- Be very aware of possible careless errors and do everything to reduce those to 0
- From there, work down my list of weaker areas:Divisibility and Primes, Inequalities etc.

Thoughts?

Hi Michael,

When I wrote my last post, I was working under the assumption that you would be taking the GMAT in approximately 2 weeks from now - and as a general rule, as you get closer to Test Day you should plan to take a new, FULL-LENGTH CAT (with the Essay and IR sections) per week. If you can't take a realistic CAT until the weekend, then that's fine. However, we need more data to explain why your Quant Scaled Score dropped in 10 days from a Q47 to a Q39. That type of 'swing' could be due to a number of different variables.

1) What is your exact Test Date?

Rich,
Sorry, I'm a little all over the place right now! I just set my test date as November 26th so I'm locked in. I've been looking for some more information on my performance as well, so hopefully I'll be able to sit a CAT this weekend to get some more information. Would you recommend another GMAT Prep CAT? They have terrible analytics but I like it that their format is exactly the same.

Hi Michael,

With your current Test Date, you have about 3.5 weeks of study time. While you could potentially make some significant improvements to how you handle the Quant section during that time, you really have to be efficient with how you go about your studies (as that time will pass by quickly). Based on everything that you've described, I think that you would find the EMPOWERgmat Quant Score Booster to be quite helpful. Most of our clients complete that Study Plan in under a month, so you would have a really good chance to complete it in the time that you have. We have a variety of free resources on our site (www.empowergmat.com), so you can 'test out' the Course before setting up an account.

If you have any additional questions, then you can feel free to contact me directly.

Hi All,
- I keep a "careless error" log - although I'm not sure how good I am at stopping these occurring!
- I have a file for each quant area and each time I get a problem wrong and review it, the piece of paper goes into the folder

How often do you look at these logs & redo the problems involved? Spaced retrieval - repeatedly revisiting concepts you want to learn, and challenging yourself to remember them cold after increasingly long amounts of time away - is a very good way to remember content. You still have time to build some spaced retrieval in to your studies, but not a lot of time, so I'd make revisiting these logs a big priority. Do you get the problems right when you redo them a second time?
