Hello!
I am looking to apply to R1 for the 2024 intake. I would request you evaluate my profile for top US/Europe FT MBA programs.

Background and nationality:
29 years, Indian Engineer Male working in Consulting sector. Lived for 15 years in Saudi Arabia (though no work per se).

Undergrad/certification information:
Bachelor in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from BITS Pilani with CGPI 7.33/10.
Completed Product Management course on Upgrad from DUKE CE

GMAT:
700 (Q50,V35) - 4th attempt after score plateau of 650. Can plan to take GRE if that helps.

Work experience and leadership:

Total Work experience: 6 years

1) Currently working as Senior Associate in a strategic healthcare consulting firm working with top US pharmaceutical clients (since June 22)
Brief of the role: Lead a team of 2 associates to operationalize the market research studies of top pharma companies for projects worth USD 2+ Mn. Few Initiatives to help the company save/generate USD 1+ Mn. The promotion is due in Sept this year.

Prior work experience:

2) Spent 3 years as a Consultant in an Impact consulting firm dealing with clients— CSR companies, NGOs, Foundations, and Government. Received 3 promotions, one every year.
Brief of the role: Lead a team of 5+ members to execute end-to-end 25+ impact assessment projects across Education, healthcare, livelihood, Water Sanitation and hygiene etc. Led PnL of projects worth USD 15 Mn. Executed data collection exercise across 22+ states of India covering 6000+ stakeholders. Helped the company expands its clientele base. Significant contribution in building team capacity and growing the team size from 7 to 32 members (when I left)

3) Worked as Development Consultant to an Indian Member of Parliament on a 1-year long fellowship program
Brief of the role: Worked on multi-million government and CSR projects to bring development to the constituency. Notable ones such as solving the decade-long arsenic contamination problem, enhancing healthcare delivery services, beautification of lakes, etc

4) 8 months as Senior Analyst at IT consulting firm. Left the firm early because I wanted more functional role and hence transitioned to social sector.

Extracurricular activities/Achievement:
1) Started a social enterprise helping artisans sell their products on e-commerce in 5+ categories with total sales of INR 1.2 Mn in 1.5 years
2) Held a leadership role of being Hostel Rep (part of the Student Union at BITS)
3) Held various leadership roles on various organizing committees of international events at the college
4) Received a Letter of Recommendation from a Member of Parliament I worked with

Post MBA goals:
Short-term: Join consulting firms in the likes of MBB in ESG or healthcare vertical (because of my experience in consulting but in my current role I'm into operations of market research and would want to get into the more strategy-oriented role)
Long-term: Start social enterprise focussed on enhancing livelihood in Indian rural areas (Showcase my commitment to the social sector and combine learning from consulting experience)

Recommendation: From my immediate managers in my current and last company.

Additional point to note:
I applied to 3 schools this March - IESE (R3), HEC Jan intake (R3), and INSEAD Jan intake (R1) - and was rejected in all 3. I believe the GMAT score or essay or profile, probably, was the concern.

Target Schools:
1) Kellogg
2) Booth
3) Duke
4) Ross
5) Darden
6) Anderson
7) Kenan-Flagler
8) INSEAD
9) LBS
10) Oxford

Hello McDuck99,

Thanks for sharing all the details and apologies for the delayed response.

Frankly speaking, the profile is not a concern as such (of course, how your strengths were presented is not something we are positioned to comment on without really going through your essays). Your existing GMAT does not particularly align with the league of schools you are targetting especially considering you belong to an over-represented pool of applicants. So, you need to either work on boosting your score or modify the list to include at least a couple of US Top 30 programs. That you are looking at applying in Round 1 will be an advantage; however, you still do need to boost your test score.

Taking the GRE is not something we would recommend; you are already acquainted with the format of the GMAT and have spent a fair bit of time preparing for excelling on the same; therefore, it would not be advisable to suddenly switch to GRE.

Should you wish to discuss your profile in greater detail, please feel free to request a profile evaluation with us.

Thanks.

All the best!

Hello harish555,

Thanks for your query.

The order would depend on numerous factors including your years of experience, career trajectory, career goals, and the geography you are targetting. Your post does not provide us with details pertaining to the same.

Hello, I would appreciate your input on my profile and opinion on the most realistic schools for me to apply to.

· Demographics:
Israeli, Male, 30 years old

· Education:
Tel-Aviv University - Political science. My total grade was a 92%, which seems to roughly translate to 3.7 GPA if I am not mistaken. I Finished in the top 15 precent of my class (one point shy of graduating with distinction, unfortunately).

· Other coursework or post-undergraduate education:
I have just finished a Data analysis course and am looking for a job in the field. Part of my reason for choosing this path is to bolster the quantitative side of my application which I feel is lacking.

· GMAT:
720 (V42, Q47, IR 7, still waiting for the AWA score), first attempt.

· Work experience:
*I enlisted into the Israeli army at 18, went through Officers course and released at the rank of First Lieutenant after 4.5 years of service.

*During my time in Uni, I worked for the Tel-Aviv Uni student Union as the foreign relations coordinator, working with foreign students that came to study at the Uni and sending domestic students abroad. A highlight of my work was planning and executing a weeklong international event with visiting students from all over the world, from the ground up.

*After graduation, I Started working abroad for a government Organization, as a delegate at UC Berkeley, CA, for two years. I worked with Berkeley students, faculty, and other organizations such as the Israeli consulate. I Advised and supervised various student groups and individuals, and Managed content, finance, and logistics for projects on campus. That's where I met some MBA students that got me excited about the possibility of getting an MBA myself.

· Extracurricular activities:
*A diplomatic leadership fellowship which was quite selective, in which we focused on issues like geopolitics, public speaking and media training.

*I was also involved in in an organization that promoted international connections between Israel and Jewish diaspora and through that I had was given some interesting opportunities:
-Leadership seminar with students from across the globe.
-Interviewed the former Israeli consul in NY in front of a live audience.
-Was flown to an international convention in Washington D.C.

· Post-MBA goals:
Hoping to Get into Consulting or otherwise develop my business acumen, hopefully so that in the future I'll be able to bring it back and work with under-represented groups and small businesses in Israel and the Palestinian authority.

· Target schools:
Haas, NYU, Yale, Virginia Darden in the US, Oxford and Cambridge in the UK. I am mostly interested in US based schools and I'm very open to advice regarding other better fitting schools to further research.

· Other information relevant to your profile:
* First generation University graduate (in fact, also first high-school graduate, as my parents did not actually graduate from high-school)

* I volunteered for two months in Nepal as an English teacher after my army service.

*North African descent.

· Other questions:
*My university degree is only 3 years, and only recently I realized some American schools do not recognize 3-year degrees, how big of an issue is this? I was pretty stressed when I heard it, and unfortunately it seems that it's an Issue for Berkeley, which is one of my top picks.

*As I said, I am currently looking for work after a Data analytics course I took, how big of an issue is it that I am currently not working?

Thanks in advance!

Hello bar8005,

Thanks for writing to us.

You have an extremely diverse profile, complete with international exposure and leadership experience and this will truly strengthen your overall case; a 720 for a first attempt is great, as well!

At this point, you should deliberate on whether you are positioned to improve your GMAT score by a few points (considering you have only taken one attempt); if you feel there is even a small possibility of boosting that score, please do give it a shot; an improved score along with a set of compelling essays is sure to give you a very good chance of making it to the top ranked schools you are aiming for.

Coming to your more specific queries:
a) Yes, some schools do not recognize a 3-year undergrad degree; however, they often accept certifications; you should connect with the Admissions Committee directly; anyhow, there are many schools top schools that do, so please do not be disheartened.

b) It would have been good to see you working; however, once again, let us focus on the controllable. You should be able to cover up for this weakness by explaining your motivation for a break and how you have grown as a person during this time frame. In short, if the Ad Com is convinced that you have used this time well, the disadvantage will be minimized.

Should you wish to discuss any of the above points in greater detail, please feel free to reach out to us for a profile evaluation session. We will be happy to help.

All the best!

Hi harish555,

Thanks for sharing all the details.

Good to see you've picked the 1-year US programs as you already hold a management degree. Having said that, do confirm your eligibility (with regard to your management degree) by writing to each school, individually.

Your experience of having worked both in the public and private sectors coupled with your exposure to leadership roles will add value to your overall case; however, you need to develop clarity on your career goals as well as boost your GMAT score in case you are targetting Stanford or Duke. Hence, you still have some amount of work to put into your application before actually getting down to the essays bit. in short, if you take care of the areas that need more work, you have a very fair chance of making it to a good number of your target schools.

Should you wish to discuss your prospects in greater detail, please feel free to request a free profile evaluation session. We will be happy to help.

All the best!

Hey bar8005,

Your profile is rich with leadership experience and international exposure, both of which are highly valued by MBA programs. Your military service, work with the Tel-Aviv University student union, and your role as a delegate at UC Berkeley demonstrate strong leadership and initiative. Your extracurricular activities also showcase your commitment to public service and your interest in fostering international relationships. The first-generation university graduate aspect of your background also adds a unique dimension to your profile.

Your GMAT score of 720 is competitive for the schools you are targeting. Your undergraduate GPA is also strong, but do verify the conversion to ensure accuracy. While your degree being three years might raise some questions, many business schools have evolved their stance on this and are more accepting of three-year degrees, especially from well-regarded universities. Do check each school's policy and reach out to admissions offices for clarification.

Your interest in data analytics and your proactive efforts to bolster your quantitative skills will help round out your profile. However, being between jobs at the time of application could be a concern, as schools typically prefer applicants with consistent employment. Try to secure a position before applying, preferably one where you can demonstrate the application of your newly acquired data analytics skills.

The schools you're targeting, such as Haas, NYU, Yale, Virginia Darden, Oxford, and Cambridge, are realistic given your profile, though they are competitive. In the US, you might consider adding Duke's Fuqua School or Michigan's Ross School, which value leadership and international experience. In the UK, consider London Business School or Imperial College Business School.

Lastly, your post-MBA goals align with your previous experiences, but ensure to present a compelling narrative linking your past experiences, MBA, and future goals. You'll need to clarify why you need an MBA to achieve these goals, why now, and how each target school will specifically aid you in your mission.

If you need more help, you can message me directly and I'd be happy to give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

· GMAT : 700 (Q48 V38 IR6), planning to take it again and increase it 720-740.

· Work experience : 3.5 years ( 4.5 by Fall Intake 2024 ), I work in my dad's company as managing partner. I'm the only heir to the business. It's a contract manufacturing company catering to OEMs. After I joined in 2020, we managed to clock in a revenue of 1.1m USD in the previous fiscal year from the pre-covid levels of 500-600k USD, I'm the contact point for our clients and have a very good relationship with our longest standing client(30 yrs). While I'm not the sole reason for the improvement in business, I can surely say I have helped in organizing the workflow and getting more orders from clients. Also I have managed to add another major client.

· Extracurricular activities : Nothing intense or special, had been a part of the official photography club during my UG where we were assigned to record and photographs most of the cultural events.

· Post-MBA goals: I intend to come back to the business soon after graduating, and concentrate more on taking the company to the next level.

· Target schools: Not even sure which colleges I can get into considering my profile, I have been interested very much in the programs offered by Columbia (J- Term), INSEAD, Cornell 1 Year MBA, IESE, Cambridge, LBS. Honestly, I don't fancy my chances here, any good university is also fine.
My preference is 1 Year programs only.

So the reason I want to do an MBA is that I thought earlier that a mechanical engineering degree was enough to take care of our business, while this is true, I felt it's not enough for me to scale the business to the next level. And also felt that an MBA would help me in the future.
Any suggestions on which colleges to concentrate or any improvements to be made in my profile would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi prithvi98,

Thanks for writing in.

The entrepreneurial experience will help differentiate your case and the fact that you intend to come back to your family business will make your goals appear quite feasible. Having said the above, the GMAT score is average (and you should definitely look at an improvement if you are targetting top-notch programs) and the lack of any major extra-curricular activities will pinch a bit.

Coming to choice of schools; since you are targetting only 1-year programs, you need to look at schools in the UK and Europe; the 1-year programs in the US prefer prior management education; so, it is not advisable to apply to those. IESE will be a good choice if you are able to improve your GMAT score; else, you will need to look at other Spanish and Italian programs. You could even look at schools beyond the top ~3 in the UK.

Since you are targetting the Fall '24 intake, it is tough for you to really build your profile (barring improving your test score) due to the paucity of time; you should now look at consolidating your strengths and putting forth a strong narrative.

Should you wish to discuss your case in greater detail, please feel free to drop us a message and we will be happy to schedule a profile evaluation session for you.

Thanks.

All the best!

👋 Hey prithvi98,

👇 Here is a detailed profile evaluation for you!

Strengths:
➡️ GMAT: A 700 is competitive, impressive and helps you target some of the good schools out there. Remember that GMAT is just 1/4th of your application as the rest depends on how you craft your SOPs, essays and LORs.

➡️ Work Experience: Doubling revenue in a family business is commendable. Being at the helm of operations and client acquisition adds value. Make sure to highlight the value and impact you brought during this. Bring out numbers that showcase the credibility of your work, like a problem you solved, or the number of people you led.

Areas for improvement:
➡️ Extracurriculars: While not a major weak point, a more active involvement would've added depth. So you can consider taking part in CSR or volunteering activities to showcase your contribution to the community.

School Suggestions:
➡️ Given your preference for 1-year programs and ambitions, consider HEC Paris, INSEAD, and Kellogg and Warwick. If you achieve a higher GMAT score of around 720-730, LBS and Columbia J-Term become achievable. For safer options, explore University of Florida, Emlyon Business School, Manchester.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to set up a FREE call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

Hi expertsglobal

It would be helpful if you can reviw my profile

Hi 26F
Indian Female
Engineering background
5years experience
I joined my current company(fintech) as a fresh grad and have been working there since
I initially joined in client service vertical where I used to have direct contact with clients from big banks all over NA,europe

After 2.5 years i internally switched within my company to a role which is a mixture of both product management and project management
I am involved in defining roadmaps, governing releases and a lot of stakeholders management

My gpa school and college is 95% and 4.2 respectively
I have a decent background in extracurricular(some competitions in school and was part of editorial committee in college)

I want to get into the following schools
UAlberta
Smith
UBC sauder
John Molson
I want to either pivot to consulting or remain in tech management.
I’m a bit unclear now because of uncertain market conditions.

I appeared for gmat twice and even after preparing hard for it i got
560 1st attempt
620 2nd attempt

I am not feeling motivated for it to appear for it for the third time.

Do I have a decent chance at getting an Mba admit with this score?

Hello skap24,

Thanks for writing in.

Good to see a stable professional trajectory, a healthy GPA, and decent extra-curricular activities.

Yes, a 620 on the GMAT is low; while it may work for schools such as John Molson, you might want to give the test another shot if you are looking at the top ~7 Canadian schools.

We understand that the fatigue has hit you hard; it is natural; however, we do recommend you give the test one more shot; if you are not able to improve your score, there are a fair number of other options you could consider within Canada as well. In short, there will be nothing to lose. :-)

All the best!
