At a certain country club, 40 percent of the members play golf. Of the members who do not play golf, 15 play tennis and 30 do not play tennis. How many members does the country club have?

A. 15
B. 30
C. 50
D. 60
E. 75

We can let the total number of members = n.

We are given that at a certain country club, 40 percent of the members play golf; thus, 60% do not play golf. Thus, 0.4n play golf and 0.6n do not play golf.

We are also given that of the members who do not play golf, 15 play tennis and 30 do not play tennis. Thus, there must be 45 members who do not play golf.

We can create the following equation to determine n:

45 = 0.6n

450 = 6n

75 = n
