Best known for his role as Randle McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Jack Nicholson’s career has spanned over five decades.
This is a classic example of illogical modification. Jack Nicholson is best known for his role as Randle McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, but Jack Nicholson’s career cannot logically be known for something. This type of error is very common on GMAT Sentence Correction problems, so always carefully assess modifiers starting a sentence.
How to correct this sentence?

There can be two ways to correct it..
Best known for his role as Randle McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Jack Nicholson’s career has spanned over five decades.
1) Best known for his role as Randle McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Jack Nicholson has had a career spanned over five decades.
2) Consisting of roles such as Randle McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Jack Nicholson’s career has spanned over five decades.
There can be various other ways by changing few words. You would find way (1) generally used.
