How many of you will be using interview prep services versus prepping by yourself or with friends? May just work with friends, but would love to hear any recommendations for Booth specific interview prep services?

No need whatsoever for specific prep services. Can you answer all the basic/standard MBA interview questions with poise? Do you have some strong answers to behavioral questions ("Tell me about a time..." type questions) that use the S.T.A.R format (situation, task, action, response)? Can you hit those points without getting lost or rambling? Do you know enough about the school to both mention specific programs, concentrations, professors, clubs, and initiatives? Do you have questions that demonstrate your knowledge of the school/program AND that are reasonable to ask an interviewer (for example, nothing you could find on the website)?

If so, you're fine. Don't come across canned. Look for story/example "frames" that you can use in multiple types of questions, and get familiar with those. You need to embody a combination of poise and looseness, which means that if you're TOO prepared, it'll seem forced/awful.

Have you had any other interviews yet? I don't think Booth has any surprises in store if you have. And this interview will be easier than the Sloan one, which is almost entirely behavioral.

No. Calls will probably start the day before the published decision day. Dings will probably arrive on decision day.

The interview invite rate, and consequently The admission rate, for R2 is seem to be much lower than that for round 1
Maybe, maybe not. Probably not everyone is reported yet. Also R1 WL'ers are reconsidered with R2 applicants.

Mbamissionimp

well they are applying to an american university. their stats should be made comparable to us and not the other way around...! either way we should know the decision today!

UofC and Booth are global universities with campuses on at least 3 continents. Booth's current student body is comprised of 36% international students, representing 52 countries. This is an integral part of the richness of the Booth experience.

Denied. No email. I tried my best. International applicant with no WE. I thought anyhow they would offer me a chance to show that I'm ready for my MBA study at the interview, but now I just don't know how to tell the Booth alumni who has helped me a lot through the whole process. I started to apply for the four MBA programs on December, in addition to my seven master applications. It was a huge workload, and no matter the ending is perfect or not, I am so proud of myself.
Best of luck to you all. Hope one day people like me who want to go to Booth directly from schools could realize their dream.

No WE is tough. Even with 2 years WE, admission is somewhat uncommon. As far as your alum supporter, tell them straight up. There is no shame in your situation. Who knows what may happen down the road...

As far as interview prep, do what you need to do to feel comfortable, but mgh234 and j0yd1v1s10n hit on some pretty important points.

Sorry-- that stings, and I'm sure you're a great person and applicant. This isn't a reflection on who you are, but on two things: what the school needs/wants right now, and how you presented yourself. Remember that it's not just numbers or WE or essays, it's the WHOLE picture together. It's how does juzam come across to the people reading your file?

I don't think your essays "sucked," but they may not tell your story the right way. Obviously you're smart (your numbers say that loud and clear) but maybe you still need to develop the insight and self-awareness that Booth may be looking for. Maybe you haven't connected your career goals to your personal passions clearly enough. Maybe you haven't yet demonstrated a habit of leadership.

Notice that all the things I mentioned are within your control and things you can work on. There's a catch, though-- while you can develop the things you may be lacking, they take time. Leadership, self-awareness, and authentic goals don't happen overnight, and no consultant can pull them out of thin air. The old statement is true: there is no substitute for experience. And while you're an impressive paper candidate, maybe the non-paper stuff is missing.

Again, this is all speculation. But it's a reasoned set of assumptions and inferences based on your youth, your "shock" over getting dinged from one of the most competitive schools in the world, and the strength of your numbers. Getting to know yourself more-- as a leader, a thinker, a visionary-- may be the missing piece. Again, just some spitballing on a Friday afternoon...

Also, everyone should keep in mind that the evaluation process is NOT in a vacuum. If you take a given person and do an absolute stellar job of preparing an application for them that communicated everything in the best possible way, then that person may certainly come across as worthy & capable of succeeding at Booth or any other top program. However, admission in any given year means that you're not simply being judged as good enough or not, you're being compared to other applicants and the school's diversity needs. The schools make a point of achieving diversity, so that implies some likely segmentation of their applicant pool (ethnicity, geography, work experience length/industry/function, gender). Then, within whatever segment you fall into, you'll be compared vs their other applicants in the segment. You may be a solid applicant...but someone else may be better and their is limited space. So, remember that a denial isn't necessarily an invalidation of you or the strength of your application, it may just be that you're being compared against a curve-wrecking overachiever =)

What's your GPA? Leadership experience? Maybe a combination of low GMAT and other factors, combined with youth/inexperience. Don't lose hope-- reapply in 2-3 years, after you focus on leadership, genuinely interesting goals, etc.

Booth's email says it can take up to 1 week. I think they match on more than location-- I'm guessing industry, age, gender, etc.

Hi All,

Can anyone help me with logistics in Chicago... never been. Where would you recommend I stay that is close to the interview site, and is it worth my while to rent a car? The campus seems quite far from the airport and i will be arriving late the night before.

Thanks!

RSAproud -- there is no need to rent a car unless you want to explore other parts of the area. There may be an odd hotel or two near the school in Hyde Park, but why not do what most Booth students do -- stay in the Loop in Chicago (there are many hotels at all price ranges there -- I stayed at the Club Quarters on Wacker and the price was quite reasonable) and take either the Metra (from the Randolph Street station) or the bus (during the week express) to Hyde Park.

I live in Chicago currently and can add some perspective. U of C and the Harper Center are located about 7 miles South of Downtown Chicago ("The Loop"). You have a few options. If it were me, I would probably rent a car and find a Hotel in Hyde Park. It's not completely necessary, but may make your stay less stressful. Hyde Park itself is a very nice, wealthy neighborhood, but do not go to far because some of the surrounding area is not somewhere you want to be. I cannot speak to the hotels around Hyde Park (or if there are even any out there). Most people that live in Chicago will never go there.

Another option is stay downtown and not rent a car. About 60% of students live downtown and take a train called the South Shore Metra Line to Hyde Park, then walk ~10 mins to the Harper Center. The entrance to the underground Metra station is located at the corner of Michigan and Randolph, so you could find a hotel around there. A few hotels that come to mind near where many students live are The Fairmont, Swissotel, Hyatt, and Raddisson Blue (there are a ton of options). It would be a ~30+ mins to get to the interview site from there. There is also a bus line, but that is probably not as easy and takes longer. You would not want to rent a car. You can fairly easily take the El (train) to and from the air port. Or at night in no traffic it's ~$40 cab ride. The advantage of the extra work here is to get a better sense of downtown Chicago and you could find the Gleacher Center if you have time, which is the home of the weekend/evening program and many students study there. Also, it would be cheaper if you skip taxi's and rentals.

Feel free to DM if you have any other questions.

As a former undergraduate, here is my advice: stay in a hotel downtown and take a taxi to the business school. There is one hotel in HP and you will need to take a taxi from there anyway. The metra is fine to take on a nice day but its quite a walk from the business school in the cold and snow. If you don't know the south side of chicago at all, take a taxi.
