FROM Booth Admissions Blog: Connect With Students via Live Chats

For those of you who may not be able to visit campus before submitting your application, or would just like another way to connect with members of the Booth community, participating in our online chats is a great option. We host chats on a variety of topics, like entrepreneurship at Boothor timely admissions Q&A chats. We try to put our students in front of you, because no one else can tell their story better than they can.

Last week, we hosted a chat on the topic of marketing at Booth. In one interaction, Miriam Droller, second-year student and co-chair of the Marketing Group, poignantly addressed a prospective student’s question about marketing at a school perceived so strongly also in finance.

“… I am a second year going into brand management and I have taken 'Investments and Corporation Finance' and I plan to take 'Cases in Financial Management' in the spring. Particularly when it comes to marketing, having expertise in other disciplines is very important. As a marketer, you often act as a general manager, working with other departments such as finance. Understanding the finances of your company as a brand manager can help you succeed in a marketing career … I absolutely love the opportunity to take classes across a wide variety of disciplines and gain expertise in areas which I know will help me as I embark upon a marketing career.”

If you've missed any of our chats, feel free to peruse the transcripts for some helpful insight into the Booth experience and answers to potential questions that you might have.

We will be hosting upcoming chats on finance and the admissions process, so stay tuned!

All the best,

Amy

Need a quick insight. Can i share an updated/ reworded resume (slightly different) from what i sent through with my application to my interviewer? Or do i have to use the same resume for my interview? Just want to highlight more of my achievements in my current role ...

Just had interview, I think it went well. I was a bit surprised that it was ALL fit questions (after the walk me through the resume question) that all basically all boiled down to "What will you do for Booth and what will Booth do for you?" It's kind of funny that Booth, known as the quant/academic school had the most casual interview; and Duke, known as a fun/collaborative schools, had the "hardest" interview with a bunch of failure/weakness questions.

Anyways, good luck everyone!

Yes, you can and you should. They actually ask you to submit an updated resume to your interviewer about 48 hours prior to the interview. Of course, if something bad happened (if one got laid off, etc.), its up to the discretion of the person whether to share this new peice of news or not.

Interesting- I probably saw you there as I just did the same. I had the opposite experience. My interview at Duke was extremely casual and conversational. Not to say that the Booth interview was intense, but mine was much more structured with those "give me an example of" prompts. I think it probably comes down to the individual interviewing you to some extent. I thought mine went pretty well too, but it's now a long-ish wait to hear if they thought so as well.

Crossing fingers for 3/26-27.

Hi Guys,

I just finished my Hub interview with Booth at Shanghai. The alum said the interview is great experience and the result is positive by him. He also asked me whether I applied other schools and I said I was admitted by Tuck. He then told me that Tuck is a great school....blablabla, and I agreed on his points. Then I said something "bad" of Tuck and something "good" of Booth, and then it's over.

Don't know what the decision will be...could just wait and see.

PS: Besides resume, why mba why booth, career goal, he only asked one behavior question on leadership.

Best of luck to everyone!

As a 1st yr student at Booth, this isn't surprising at all. By the time prospective students get to the interview stage at Booth, it's all about fit. We have a different culture from other MBA programs and it's important that a admitted student can add to the learning experience.

FROM Booth Admissions Blog: My Booth Journey

As a new Assistant Director to the Full-Time MBA Admissions team, I am excited to work with you along your MBA journey.

My own journey to Booth began almost two years ago, when I started working with the Evening MBA and Weekend MBA programs. My move to Full-Time Admissions comes with some new responsibilities and challenges; I’m working on the Operations and Evaluation team, which manages the evaluation process from beginning to end. I will be focusing on things like ensuring your experience with our application system is a good one, and guiding the Admissions committee through the assessment process. As you can imagine, this entails a lot of data analysis, as well as looking at operational efficiencies within our systems. That’s appealing to me - I enjoy solving problems and I like to find connections. I try to work and live efficiently and I don’t like to waste time or materials. I’m interested in being able to analyze a problem, and with the help of data, find a solution that makes our processes more efficient and user-friendly. I like doing what makes sense. For me, my role at Booth is a perfect fit.

Data and efficiency aside, I also enjoy the opportunity to watch applicants evolve into students. From that first inquiry for information, to their on-campus interview, to the first day of the quarter when they’re heading to class, it is very rewarding for me to see their journey unfold.

I also get a chance to see firsthand how accessible our students are to the MBA candidates. I think it really shows the kind of community that Booth has. These are really great people who are happy to be here and happy to see others come here.

So to the hopeful applicants, I look forward to answering your questions, helping you navigate your way through our application process, reading your essays, seeing you at an information session, and saying hi to you on your first day of class. I also look forward to growing in my role at Booth and learning from all of the smart people who are here every day.

Cheers,

Tyler

Hi

Does anyone know whether candidates are notified once the interviewer submits the interview report? I was interviewed off-campus on 25th Feb and haven't received any notifications regarding the completion of the interview. Do I need to check with the adcom?

You're fine. There's no notification for that.

It seems like this year about 40% were interviewed 1st and 2nd round. Last year it was at 50%+. Are they interviewing fewer people?

Possibly, could just be that people are slow to update on this site too.

Had my off-campus alum interview yday with an '05 alum. Pretty conversational - he had my resume already so we straight away got into a discussion on my background, asking some specific questions about why I did what I did. Then the Why MBA and Why Booth questions...with all this taken care of in 10-15 mins, rest was him sharing his experience, value of MBA, Chicago city, etc etc. No behavioral questions, no strengths/weaknesses, etc. Perhaps one of the most relaxed interviews I have had. Hoping for the best now...

Has anyone used zoom interviews.com to prepare for the interviews. Are there alternatives as it seems that the website is not allowing purchase of the services. I would appreciate insights on this.

Around 40-50% for R2, if I am not mistaken. Please correct me someone if I am wrong.

Had my off-campus alum interview yesterday. Fits with the same general profile others have posted. The alum was young, enthusiastic about Booth, and very personable. The format was standard: he explained the structure of our time together, walked me through his background pre-Booth, his time there, his work afterward, and then told me he'd open the floor for me to talk.

I walked him through my resume, pivoted immediately to "Why MBA?"/"Why Booth?"/"Goals After," talked through the most recent jobs report, etc. He was very positive/favorable about my work experience, had great things to say about his time at Booth, and we had about 15 minutes to chat at the end about my questions. It was very relaxed, conversational, and encouraging. I walked away feeling like I'd demonstrated that I'd done my homework on the school, understood the culture, and explained (through examples) how I'm a good fit for their environment.

Now a long wait 'til 3/27/14 when decisions are released!
