Hi - I was invited to interview and am trying to decide if I should interview on campus or in my home city (Boston/NYC). In the invite it says "While we encourage everyone to interview on campus, as it is an additional opportunity to experience the Chicago Booth culture and discover your #WhyBooth reason, we certainly understand that this is not always possible." This makes it seem like they DO prefer you to interview on campus, and might hold it against you if you interview with an alum off-campus. However, on their admissions page general info, they say they don't care where you interview.

Anyone have recommendations/insights on if making the trek to Chicago will improve my application, and if not going will hurt it? The weather is awful so I also don't want to stress about flight cancellations. I'd prefer to just interview at home.

Thanks!!
Making the trek does not "improve" your application. What it will do is improve your understanding of Booth (academics, culture, building, recruiting, etc). They encourage the on campus interview so you can see if Booth is a place you really want to be, especially if you've never been there. So do what works best for you. Interviews with alums are weighted the same as on campus interviews and what matters is your performance. j0y is right in that you just need to be able to really articulate, "Why Booth?" if and when you're asked.

FWIW, I interviewed off campus as did many of my classmates and friends in class of 2015.

Just thought I should let the forum know that after much consideration, my spouse and I have decided to decline Booth. It has been a tough decision, but we hope that our two seats will sweeten up someone's day soon.
Thank you for everything, and all the best!

I think Wharton vs. Booth is a tough decision. Can you share with us what made you decide to go with Wharton?

FROM Booth Admissions Blog: Artistic Inspiration at Booth

During my first week with the Admissions department at Booth, I found my mind wandering as I took a tour of the Harper Center. Recollections of my college days, while working towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, rushed to the surface. During studio classes, I would roam the halls of the fine arts building whenever my legs needed stretching. I vividly recall taking in the artwork of young talent who were in the process of learning their artistic techniques. This memory made me curious about the complexity of the pieces that hang in the Harper Center.

This w
as not like work I had seen in any college building before. The Harper Center is home to one of the most expansive contemporary art collections in the city of Chicago. I find this to be inspiring, and a little unexpected coming from a business school. It’s a modern compilation  of various artists both known and new to the scene, and does not center around any particular theme.

After a little over a month in the Booth community I am getting more accustomed to the unexpected and thought provoking environment that thrives here. I now understand the intellectual value of the collection. It’s not just for show and tell, it’s about challenging the status quo - getting people to think. Contemporary art forces its viewers to interpret from an alternative angle and explore subjective reasoning. We push the boundaries by exposing students to varied and possibly unfamiliar subjects. It’s just one more way that Booth encourages intellectual exploration.

So when I’m asked, “Why Booth?” I think about what drew me to the institution in the first place. As a rookie in the higher education industry, I find it refreshing coming to work every day and being surrounded by brilliance, curiosity and new challenges.

In my new role as Assistant Director of Admissions, I will have the opportunity to work closely with current students. Applying my previous experience in event planning, I’ll be collaborating with them as they develop and execute Admit Weekend. I’m also excited to add some dimension to the Admissions marketing team by incorporating my art and design background into future projects and bringing fresh perspectives to our work.

Much like contemporary art challenging the thought process for business students, the Booth community will enhance my intellectual exploration. Inspired by a method of thinking that allows for the generation of ideas, I’m looking forward to making my make my mark at Booth with an entrepreneurial approach.

All the best,

Courtney

...Another option is stay downtown and not rent a car. About 60% of students live downtown and take a train called the South Shore Metra Line to Hyde Park, then walk ~10 mins to the Harper Center.

Quick clarification: the train you want is the Metra Electric. South Shore Line is actually an Indiana commuter train (not Metra, although they do share tracks) with a different ticketing system and less convenient times. The description of the stations etc. was accurate.

Hey guys,

I was wondering about the interview. What are the main questions that R 1 applicant got? any other tips?

Cheers,

There are a lot of resources out there on interview questions. Have you mastered the basics of MBA interview questions? Those usually are "Why MBA?"; "Why now?"; "Why [this school]?"; "What do you want to do afterward?"; "Why do you need an MBA to do that?"; and usually some behavioral questions related to leadership, teamwork, etc.

Do you know the difference between those and behavioral ("Tell me about a time...") questions? Do you know the STAR (situation, task, action, response) format to make sure you address those questions properly? Can you talk about your resume crisply, quickly, and clearly with themes/overarching ideas that tie your experience together? Have you done research on specific concentrations, clubs, professors, and experiences that make the school unique?

If you can answer "yes" to all those questions, you're in good shape. Otherwise, I recommend you look on ClearAdmit for a list of questions that are specific to Booth, but also get familiar with those other question types and your responses to the standard questions. The Booth interview is a more conversational one that hits the issues/areas I mentioned above, but there may be some behavioral questions thrown in too. It's not 100% behavioral like the Sloan interview is supposed to be.

Good luck!

VERY tough decision. I was in the exact same one, except I ended up going with Booth. It mostly comes down to personal preference. (IMO) Wharton definitely has the history and is good for PE, but Booth's overall career services is unbelievable, it's in a much better city, and I really like the direction Booth is going with its entrepreneurial programs. The school has so much flexibility with where it wants to go in terms of development because of the insane donations it gets on a regular basis. I was so close to going with Wharton because of its network size, but I think I made the right decision for me. You really can't go wrong either way.

Hi All! I received an interview invite on Thursday, and chose to interview off-campus with alumni. I haven't yet been assigned an interviewer. Anyone in the same boat? The online application said that I would be assigned someone within 48 hours, while the email confirmation I got said 1 week. So, I am not sure whether I should write to someone at the school or wait.

Yes I am infact in the same boat and have the same doubt! :| Should we be mailing them?

In particular, for all the Indian applicants called for an interview:
Guys, those of you interviewing in India - Has anyone of you got your interview details?
Probably, someone who has been in the similar situation in R1 can help here? :)

Folks, Booth says it can take 1 week to match interviewees with local alumni interviewers. I know people are anxious about it, but if you got a confirmation email, don't obsess. They are in high season right now-- taking deposits from R1 applicants, processing all of our interview requests for on and off-campus sessions, hosting visitors, etc.

Truly truly, if you don't get something one FULL week after you got the confirmation email, THEN email or call the admissions office. They are not going to rescind your offer for an interview if somehow they screw up. Again, if you got the confirmation after you accepted the interview offer, you're fine.

It's certainly possible. I know several people who applied R3 or were WL'ed until/after R3 and ended up at Booth. It's nearly impossible to predict, as admission at that point is dependent on what happened in R1 and R2.

At this point, it is critical to put forward a coherent application that addresses the question "Why R3?" in addition to everything else.

Good Luck!
