I would say 4 key factors determine the strength of your work-ex: branded employers, progression/ promotions, international exposure and tangible impact on the role (e.g. reduced costs by USD X, improved efficiency by Y% etc.). Ideally, you want to have all these, but not everyone can and schools understand that. The more of these dimensions you can showcase, the better from a work-ex perspective.

Switches aren't a red flag per se, as long as you can justify your reasons/ motivations and how you professionally grew. Multiple switches within short tenures isn't ideal though.

So when you say progression I infer that if we’re able to display tangible and sizeable growth in each role then a title jump per say won’t be necessary right?

Also does INSEAD have a preference for the GMAT/GRE?

I've also observed that the lack of promotions concerns alumni interviewers more than it does the adcom. So, if your profile is robust but lacks promotions to showcase, anticipate questions about it during the INSEAD interview. The INSEAD adcom understands that certain industries may not facilitate rapid changes in designations, but the alumni interviewers might not grasp this, depending on who you are paired with. But if the letters of recommendation and the applicants themselves can convincingly demonstrate growth and learning even without formal promotion, this can be effective.

I read your brief… was very detailed and helpful.

Particularly in my case I would say there haven’t been any promotions per say as I’ve switched jobs but each role has definitely entailed greater responsibilities and has offered something new.. do you think that kind of progression can help with the lack of promotions?

anahitasingh2103 it's hard to provide a definitive answer without knowing the other details of your profile. Incremental responsibilities are a good thing, but the inability to show stability or depth in any job role could be viewed as a red flag if not addressed well. How you balance these factors in your essays, along with your choice of recommenders and LORs will determine the overall perception of your application.

>>BBA with a major in Finance from Narsee Monjee

2. A bit more detail on your professional experience would be good, e.g. are the hedge-fund/ start-up well-known branded names, were there promotions, reasons for switch, etc.
>> I was with D.E. Shaw, one of the top hedge funds based out of the US. I received 2 promotions in 3 years and worked closely with the Macro trader based out of NY. Switched to a more challenging role, a Series A funded InsurTech startup. Working closely with the founders to improve customer experience.

3. What's the Q/ V split of your GMAT?
>> Q45 V41

4. Any involvement in Extra Curricular activities, ideally post undergrad?
>> 6 months volunteering for an NGO into education. 6 months as the PoSH lead in the startup.

The work-ex, acads and ECs sound interesting.

While your GPA, CFA level-1, and Financial Analysis role could potentially speak to your Quantitative abilities, the Quant score in GMAT is not ideal.

Given that INSEAD recommends a 70th percentile or above in both sections to be competitive (this isn't a mandate, but as an international applicant, it's highly recommended), I would suggest a retake (or switch to GRE) to increase your odds.

Hi,
Could you please evaluate my profile for a second MBA? I am still in two minds on whether I should consider the MBA or not.
I am an Indian, 28M with the following credentials:
- Bachelors in CSE - passed with honours (only honours grad of my class). 7.95/10 GPA - not percentile.
- CAT 2018 98.63%ile, general category
IIM Trichy PGP (MBA) 2019-21. 3.15 GPA
- Total 5 years 7 months of work experience
- Winged a 700 (Q44 V34) in 2018 just based on CAT prep. Confident of a 740 with dedicated preparation

Work experience:
- Currently, employee #1 at an investment banking startup, having raised $800,000 in pre-seed funding.I lead product management and have built a marketplace from 0 to 1. I also help in lead generation and connecting startups with investors. - Experience in design and generative AI.
- Previously, Associate Director of Product Management at a US-based B2B SaaS company, managing product ownership and maintaining high client visibility.

Pre-MBA:
- Worked in a small manufacturing firm in IT
- Founded a small homestay (that is still active by the way) for passive income
- Interned and PPOd at Tata Consultancy Services, didn’t take it up because wanted to do entrepreneurship

Motivation for a second MBA:
- COVID and dire personal circumstances ruined the MBA experience
- Want to move into AI Product Management at the Amazons and Googles of the world, or digital consulting, aiming for roles at leading tech firms or with the Big 4, preferably in dynamic markets like Singapore, Malaysia, the UK, the Middle East, India, or Australia.

­Hi nadeemnajeeb hope this finds you well,

Since you already have a PGDM/2 year MBA, you should first ask yourself what is stopping you from pursuing a job at Amazon or Google / Big Tech / Big 4 in dynamic markets. Is it because you are not able to tap into the right network, or have you not even tried? An MBA abroad is a big investment, and since you would be applying for a second MBA, schools will want to see how motivated you are, and they will look more closely at your reasons for making this big investment.

Profile -wise, I would definitely suggest an upwards of 740 equivalent on the GMAT focus. INSEAD is spoilt for choice, therefore a high GMAT will allow you to remain relevant in the vast pool of applicants. For applicants who come from small and emerging early-stage startups, the business schools evaluate your success in the context of how the startup has also grown during the same time-period. So it becomes very important that you bring forth very clearly how have your contributions in your respective area taken your company's position from 0 to 1 in that area. Also to demonstrate high level of ownership , go deep into unpacking your experiences and reconstruct your stories in a way that shows that working on projects in with senior execs and C suite members (your managers or clients) in both your jobs has given you a much more hands-on experience, more experiential maturity, and more capability to contextualize business problems (specific to your area of work in tech) than most others who come from similar backgrounds. Overall a great profile, although much discussion is still needed to assess your fit for INSEAD.

­nadeemnajeeb - interesting profile overall. Some thoughts: 

1. A second MBA makes more sense if you're targeting a (digital) consulting role abroad. As an Indian candidate without a global MBA, landing an MBB or a big-4 consulting role in the Middle East can be quite difficult otherwise, given the sheer competition. For a PM role though, it may not be as hard: I've seen several IIM (particularly A/B/C) grads working in PM in EU/ UK. Perhaps you want a bigger brand, but either way, it'd help to prioritize your target roles/ companies, and conduct a destination analysis i.e. what ways (if any) can a second MBA help you achieve your goals?

2. Your blend of tech and entrepreneurial experiences can offer interesting talking points. It'd be cruicial to link your past experiences, functional learnings, skill-sets gained to your professional and personal goals, to then identify the gaps that you are seeking to fill. Another question that would likely come up is why now i.e. is the start-up doing well, etc.

3. Schools like INSEAD value international exposure and Extra-Curriculars, any involvement in these?

4. Aiming for a 730-740+ (GFE equivalent) with a balanced Q/ V/ DI split can help increase odds amongst the competitive demographic pool.

I am an Indian, 29M with the following credentials:

• B.com (Hons) 2016- South Campus, Delhi University - 76.07%
• Member, ACCA - 2022 (UK)
• Member, CPA Bermuda
• Total 6 years 3 months of work experience
Work experience:

• Assistant Manager, KPMG – Financial services, Stat Audit
• In charge of leading audits for insurance clients based in Bermuda
• Joined the firm as an entry-level audit assistant and got promoted to AM in less than 6 years
• Won several accolades for outstanding performance over the tenure
• International work experience – 2 months in Bermuda in client-facing in-charge role in Audit (2024)

Motivation for an MBA:
• Want to transition into a global consulting role preferably in Europe
• Having international exposure and a host of global clients, I am interested in moving overseas for better opportunities
• Ideally, looking for 1-year program

Hi,
Could you please evaluate my profile for an Insead MBA?

I am an Indian, 29M with the following credentials:

• B.com (Hons) 2016- South Campus, Delhi University - 76.07%
• Member, ACCA - 2022 (UK)
• Member, CPA Bermuda
• Total 6 years 3 months of work experience
Work experience:

• Assistant Manager, KPMG – Financial services, Stat Audit
• In charge of leading audits for insurance clients based in Bermuda
• Joined the firm as an entry-level audit assistant and got promoted to AM in less than 6 years
• Won several accolades for outstanding performance over the tenure
• International work experience – 2 months in Bermuda in client-facing in-charge role in Audit (2024)

Motivation for an MBA:
• Want to transition into a global consulting role preferably in Europe
• Having international exposure and a host of global clients, I am interested in moving overseas for better opportunities
• Ideally, looking for 1-year program

Please let me know what should be my target GMAT score.

­akshj03 -  Some good angles in the profile i.e. big-4 brand/ client-facing role, promotions, international stint (though this can also include any project-work with teams abroad).

There is no one magic score, but aiming for 10-20 points above the school's average w/ a balanced split would be ideal, considering the competitive demographic pool. This comes to GFE equivalent of a 730+.­

You have a seemingly average profile for INSEAD without knowing the many details . In a first, target a very high Gmat score. And focus on telling your story differently with unusual elements of interest. For example, showcase your experience in and your unique insights on offshore financial regulations, a valuable skill set for a global business context. Hope you get the direction i am suggesting. Show how you could add a unique perspective to the INSEAD classroom discussions. Highlight client engagement, stakeholder management, and communication skills, as working in/for Bermuda likely involved interacting with clients from various parts of the world. Pick an unusual theme for your application, so that you beat the competition from within the audit/big4 pool.

Hello,
I am applying for the January 2025 term and have a query regarding the entry and exit language requirements.
I know multiple languages and have all the necessary certifications highlighting proficiency. Can I use one of them as an exit language?

Hey,
I got a dinged email for Jan'25 class. I finished my application in January itself...way before the deadline of March for R1. I am surprised why would they dinge even before receiving all the applications.
Has anything like this ever happened?
