| FROM Darden Admissions Blog: Introducing the Darden SWAT Team |
|
Darden students are known for taking the initiative and implementing ideas that improve the MBA experience. In today’s blog, Second Year student Stephen Reiff discusses how a new initiative geared towards energizing First Year students evolved from concept to reality: Greetings Prospective Students! I’m a Second Year student at Darden writing to tell you about an exciting new initiative we’ve implemented this year called the Darden SWAT team. ![]() The SWAT team concept was derived as a result of an analysis of the First Year experience as part of Professor Jeanne Liedtka’s class, “Innovation and Design Thinking.” It’s no secret that Darden students work hard, and our mission as the SWAT team is to spontaneously and creatively encourage First Years. ![]() For our first event, which occurred before the First Years embarked on their first exam period, the SWAT team burst into each and every learning team room playing the theme song “Everything is Awesome” from the Lego Movie loudly and proudly to announce our arrival. Using a megaphone, we promptly informed each learning team that ice cream sandwiches were waiting from them in Flagler Courtyard. Though it was hard to pull some of the teams away from their Excel models, the event was a huge success and was a successful introduction of the SWAT team, who would soon reappear on a cold morning about a month later… The date was 20 October and the temperature at 7:30 a.m. that Monday morning was around 30-degrees – it felt like the first day of winter! The recruiting process was also in full force and the First Years looked half-asleep as they rounded the corner for their 8:00 a.m. classes. However, this morning, the Darden SWAT team along with other Second Year volunteers and faculty members were out to greet them, passing out power bars and Gatorades. We waved around signs and gave out countless high fives with, of course, “Everything is Awesome” playing on repeat in the background. ![]() As one First Year wrote in our school newspaper, “Walking through Ivy Apartments…I could barely feel my face and I couldn’t care less. The Darden SWAT team showed up from nowhere and cheered us to plow through.” A month later, towards the end of November, the SWAT team struck again as the First Years sat in a rare 8:00 a.m. Friday morning class after a long week of cases and recruiting. Bursting in through the classroom doors, the four SWAT team members ran into the room with Chick-Fil-A breakfast sandwiches and Gatorade for everyone. As one professor wrote to our team afterwards, “The First Years appreciated the breakfast, and more importantly, the support and energy.” The rest of the events we have planned are top-secret at the moment, but the Darden SWAT team will continue to strive to spontaneously and creatively encourage our beloved First Year class.” Stephen Reiff Chair, Darden SWAT team |
