If you can explain it in your optional essay well, not really. As long as you can justify it, anything goes

Not all questions can be asked in the zoom session in front of an AdCom member - we get it. But this is a safe space. Ask all the questions you might have. Tejas and I will be more than happy to give our two cents.

Hi, everyone! My name is Ankit and I’m an incoming MBA candidate at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. I was also the GMAT Club Fuqua moderator for 2022-2023. (The spotlight moderator before me ended up going to Fuqua, too, so maybe it’s a good omen?). I made it out of the waitlist with a merit scholarship, too! I’m from India. I applied in the Early Action round with a GMAT score of 710. I did my undergrad (B.Com) from University of Calcutta and was in the top 0.5% of my class. I’m also a Chartered Accountant (similar to a US CPA) and a Company Secretary (specializing in Corporate Law and Corporate Governance). I was working for a plastic pipe and fitting manufacturing company and I worked there for 6.5 years. I was responsible for taking the day-to-day financial and strategic decision making of the company, but in the past 3 years, I’ve been involved a lot of executive-level decision-making. Ideated an executed some great projects which focused on profitability along with sustainability. I also have a lot of volunteering experience. I’m a stand-up comic and storyteller as well (working on my first novel for while now T_T). I was waitlisted after applying in the Early Action round, and then I sent in a bunch of updates highlighting my professional accomplishments and retaking the standardized test. I went in for EA and scored 161 on it. Please feel free to ask your question if you think I can help you out. Please keep in mind that I have not been to Durham yet, so I can’t give out any advice about the school or Durham in general.

congrats on your acceptance to Fuqua! as an international student, can you please tell me why Fuqua was your first choice?

It could be something that makes your application stand out, or something that completely breaks your application. Completely depends on what you do during that gap year and equally on how well you’re able to portray it in your application.

Gap years, poor grades, other things that might seem like red flags to you could become valuable points if you portray them appropriately.

Sure! So, I eliminated the M7 schools for two main reasons: 1) my GMAT Score was lower, especially as an Indian I felt like it would be a waste of time, 2) they’re very competitive and I’m someone who works well in a wholesome and collaborative environment.

The second reason was more relevant in my mind than the first. So, I started off by keeping NYU Stern, UVA Darden and Duke Fuqua at the top of my list. After speaking to current students, I found that over 95% of my cold emails/texts to Duke alums and current students were answered, whereas for the other two it was around 60-70%. I’m not saying that they’re not collaborative, but this was just my personal experience. Might be different for someone else - that’s why school selection is a art and not a science.

The more I talked to and connected with the Fuqua community, the more I felt at home. The program was great, the people were great, the employment stats were great. It was just the perfect fit for me. And when the STEM designation was announced, it just felt like a cherry on the cake (or on the icing of the cake).

here are a few points that I considered:

1) Being an international applicant, I wanted to attend a school that gave equal value and focus to the international students, not just for the diversity of the class. I saw that with my interactions with the adcom, students, professors etc. Their dean, Bill Boulding, was one of the only Deans from any of the top business schools who actually visited India for a session.

2) The location and class size was ideal in terms of the environment that I wanted my BSchool education. I didn’t want to be in a major city amongst the hustle bustle.

3) The responsiveness of the adcom and the students. Team Fuqua is real and it shows in every interaction with anyone from the Fuqua community, everyone is so willing to help!

4) I wanted a program that gave me equal exposure to consulting and Product Mangement and Fuqua’s entirely STEM certified program gave me the option to explore multiple courses and concentrations without the worry of the VISA extension.

Oh yes! Dean Boulding’s India session was amazing. I remember attending it virtually because I’m not from Delhi. Tejas, did you attend it in-person?

Yup, it just so happened to coincide with my visit to Delhi and I am so grateful! I asked him about his Duke Socks and if they give those out to admits as well. Morgan remembered this when she called me with the news of my admit.

It’s these small things that just make me fall in love with Fuqua that little bit more each time!

He really took out the time to explain the three main pillars of Fuqua’s vision: Decency quotient, entrepreneurial mindset, and something to do with using tech responsibly or aligning it for the good of the society

Dudeeee!!! That was you? I remember it too! It was a memorable question xD I actually checked out Fuqua’s merch store a while ago after I got my admit just to see if they still had those socks!

Btw, please feel free to send in your questions. It’s past 4 AM in the IST timezone and we want to stay up for the whole chat session window!

Of course! People were asking about rising inflation and how Fuqua is approaching employment given the current market conditions. And then - socks! xD I loved that

hahah the mood was intense in that hall! and it’s so amazing how you remember the details from something that happened almost a year back!

But yes, it’s very late (or early?!) here in India and we’d really want to utilize the entire duration of this chat session to address any queries at all. So even if it’s a simple question, please do ask it here!

If your question is whether we got scholarships. Then yes! we both did, I was waitlisted in R1 and then got off the waitlist in R2 with a 60k scholarship.
