Things that don’t work: 1) Your GMAT score being the only highlight of your application. If you have that 750-760 and are still trying to get a 770-780, your time might be better spent on other aspects of your application 2) Trying to show off your achievements. I know someone who was a TIME 30 under 30 something, Started his own company, made millions etc, but his entire 25 point essay was just about HIM. filled with "I"s and he didn’t even get an interview.
This really gives a clear idea of what the school looks at. Thanks !!

What GRE score should we target coming from an over-represented pool? Like for GMAT, we generally say 740+

Fuqua

*Fuqua’s average is around 320. So I would try to get atleast 3-4 points above that

But as Jagmeister said, there’s absolutely no guarantee that even a 330+ will be safe. Or that a <320 will automatically get you dinged

For example

I helped XYZ NGO increase their yearly donations by $1 million. I was instrumental in getting the NGO a UN association. I lead a team of volunteers to construct hospitals.

VS

Working together with the NGO’s officials, we devised a plan to improve engagement and bring in more donations. Coming from a social media background, I worked with a team of passionate individuals to establish an online presence for the NGO and together we were able to bring in $1 million in donation. I was able to fulfil my long term goal of helping to construct hospitals through my association with XYZ NGO.

How random is too random for the 25 random things essay? :P
Okay I’ll be real about this. Even though the website asks you to make it super random, don’t :P Think strategically about the qualities you want to highlight.

I started by randomly writing facts about myself. And they were super random. I had 50+ of them. Then I started shortlisting the high-impact ones which made me look like a coherent and a sane person.

For example: My name is Ankit, which in hindi means ’to write’. Growing up, I wasn’t that strong in English and never had great teachers. But now I think of myself as a great storyteller and I’m working on my first book. So life does come a full circle.

This random fact is the one I started my essay with.

Another example: In the 7th grade, I was running the relay race. I fell down and tore my pants from one knee to the other. And even that did not stop me. Until that day, no one had ever seen someone pass the baton wear superman boxers

This random fact is the one I ended my essay with.

Both of them show resilience in different settings.

Hope this makes sense

Great examples! Let me give some more from my essay, just to help you guys get started! But then again, none of these are useful if you don’t get the essence behind why we added these points, which will be very personal and very different for all of you

I was a honours student in my undergraduation so, the university that I was under only considered the honours subjects to determine my percentage. Will Duke Fuqua consider as per my university rules or it will take into consideration all my subjects that I had in my undergraduation that is honoura as well as general paers?

They look at the full transcript; the difficulty of classes, type of classes, trends in your grades, etc

coming from a non-consulting background, How will Fuqua support be to improve my skills for a career in consulting post-MBA? and how are consulting job opportunities for international students?
Great question. See, no one will tell you this but it’s not like your skillset will grow 10x just by doing an MBA. Having a globally diverse class helps you expand your worldview and a great schools provides you access to a great network, but other than that, if you’re expecting that you’ll learn everything right out of the gate - that’s not going to happen. You’ve to take leadership and ownership for your growth. You’ve to figure out areas you’re weak in and the CMC will 100% support and advice you on how to move forward. But there’s zero spoonfeeding and hand holding. And tbh, this is true for every MBA program out there

1) Since 7th grade, I decided to learn one new skill every summer vacation. I do not get breaks anymore, but I have continued the tradition, learning to solve the Rubik’s cube, juggle, play the ukulele and pursue philately, to name a few.

2)Dreaming of being a magician when I was young, I asked my uncle in the US to get me Bicycle Playing cards, a brand used by all famous magicians. I performed in my school several times, even starting a YouTube channel and making a friend in Vietnam because of this shared passion.

These are a few from my application. I hope you are able to see the qualities and lessons that we are trying to highlight through these points while at the same time putting them across through very personal and light hearted anecdotes.

I read in the above chat that programmers might be given less importance over others with same work experience. So I’d just wanna know do Indian female programmers have an advantage during the shortlisting process that the Indian male programmers don’t ? It’s a little less represented pool I believe! Or does everything ultimately zero down to applocation/resume irrespective of location/origin?
Again, don’t think about all this. Focus on the high-impact contributions you’ve made at your workplace and highlight those to tell a coherent story. That’s what’s going to help you get in

Thanks for the replies. Do we get enough time to do part-time work? MBA is really expensive if I don’t end up getting a scholarship
