Another one from me - if there was one thing you could do differently in your applications, what would that be?
Fix my resume early on. I think I got waitlisted because my resume wasn’t presented that well. I cannot emphasize the importance of a resume. It’s literally the face of your candidacy. The last waitlist update that I sent in was an updated resume and I got an offer with a merit scholarship 10 days later (after being waitlisted for 9 months)

Another important point guys, give enough time to school research as well. if you genuinely connect with the school, course, community, town, etc. You’ll put in the effort to get in. If it’s one among the many options, your efforts will be half-hearted.

I got rejected from a lot of lower ranked MBA programs because I was focusing on my Fuqua application. I’m glad I didn’t give each program equal attention.

Thanks! A follow-up to that, does applying in EA limit scholarship potential since one loses leverage to negotiate?
Nope. Both Ankit and I got off waitlists (after applying in EA) with scholarships!

Nope. It’s very wholistic. Rather it gives you a better chance. Don’t worry about these things and try putting your best foot forward. At the end of the day, we’re all targeting a full-ride at our dream schools

How many schools did you all apply to in total? I know Duke was the priority but just curious to know

Do you have any suggestions on how to show fit within your application?
Hire a good admissions consultant :P I found it very difficult to juggle introspection with work so I worked with one and my experience was good.

Look at the average class profile and very objectively compare the profiles with what you bring to the table. That’s what I did.

Also don’t go by rankings please. IF a school appeals to you but is not so highly ranked. If everything makes sense, the post MBA opportunities match your goals, you’ve done your research and spoken to current and graduated students. don’t discourage yourself just because it’s not a Top 10 or Top 15.

Um, 4-5 in R1. I got waitlisted at Fuqua and Ross. Admitted to Georgetown McDonough. In R2, I applied to LBS, IESE and UNC but I wasn’t interested in Europe so I could never justify it well. And UNC was an application fee waiver case so I just went for it xD

*Personally* I think this is a bit overblown. I got into Fuqua and got interviews at CBS and Haas, but I got rejected by Kenan Flagler and UCLA

Good question! Check the average scores for schools. Add another 20 if you’re an Indian male. or another 10 if you’re an Indian woman. And see where your score lies. If your score is near to this modified score, it’s a target. If it’s above, it’s a dream school. If it’s below, it’s a safety. But with the right mindset, you can easily make a dream school your target.

At what point in the year did you start working with a consultant? Would you be open to telling us which firm/consultant you worked with? There are just so many options out there. But none that won’t take me for every penny that I have :P

echoing this 100%!!! I used to chase rankings too when I was studying for the GMAT. I applied to NYU because a) i’m into stand up comedy, so wanted to be in NYC, b) it’s NYC - i mean, c’mon :P

but then somewhere I lost my will to study at Stern even though it’s a great and highly ranked school. I just couldn’t relate to the people there and I felt very disconnected.

For me it seems like all the class profiles are nothing like me. They are all overachievers :P
